Is there a way to keep my 400 from sputtering to it's death when i hit water? I had the thing stall twice yesterday, found myself going 2 mph though water :(

What makes them do this? :eek2:

Assuming that it isn't a electrical issue, you are somehow getting water in your intake. is you airbox lid still on? any mods to your air box? The stock airbox design is build pretty well in terms of keeping water out.

There is a holeonthe airbox, looks like an opening below the the intake tube thingy :p

Looks like something should go there :ermm:

keeping the air filter dry is key, there should be a plug on the drain on the bottom of the air box. then there should be a lid, and last there should be a snorkel that runs up under the gas tank.

Take off the spark plug wire, get vaseline and get some in there. Coat all electrical connections with vaseline as well.

Hole in the airbox? Theres a small clean out tube that fits on the end, its rubber.? That what your talking about?

It's not from getting water on your filter.

Just like CJM said, it is from water getting up around the sprak plug area.

Not saying that keeping the air filter dry is a bad thing, I am just saying I had the same problem and what CJM said is what I did and it quit.

I have the same problem when I hit water going fast. It still did it even when I had the full lid/drain tube/ snorkel setup on it too. I never tried vaseline on the plug boot though. Why would water getting in there make it sputter and die? Is it getting up inside the boot and shorting the spark out? How much do I smear on the inside of it? Do I fill the hole or just put some on the tip of my finger and wipe it off up inside the boot? Lol, lots of Qs.

I always put a little dielectric grease on my spark plugs and I still have the snorkel and I have bald *** tires so I rip through mud lol.. Never stalled or bogged once, Definetly second or third what cjm said

yea its basically shorting it out, water+electric=bad lol.

You can use dielectric grease but vaseline is basically the same. I just put a good old dab in the boot and go.

do you see the big white/clear/dirty/tan tube that runs from that hole to under the tank? that's referred to as the snorkel. which you need it you plan to go through mud/water

I got one for $20 at my local Honda dealer (stock not aftermarket, dont think they make aftermarket snorkels?). My bike was a Jerry-Rig special when I bought it so I had to replace all sorts of little pieces. This one included.

i have never seen an aftermarket one. if you want a legit snorkel you can make one from pvc pipe like the 4x4 atv guys do. i would bet its going to be very restrictive though.

I removed my snorkel and used a lid from a spraypaint can to plug the hole (worked good & tight) then bought an Outerwears prefilter and followed this thread to mod my airbox lid.http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=330349&highlight=airbox+mods I ride through some water and hose down the whole quad, but the prefilter keeps the water out.
