View Full Version : Table Mounted 400EX Motor

After my hybrid project my 400ex motor has just been sitting on a sheet of plywood in a barn style shed, unfortunatly we had a hurricane here in Florida a few months ago. My neighborhood was on the news for a few weeks because of all the flooding, unfortunatly at the time of the hurricane and the flood the barn style shed was the least of my worries.

Some time had past after the flood and it came time for me to get my motor from the "barn style" storage where it had been. I went to pick up my motor and a bunch of water pore'd out :eek2:

I asked the people that lived there how high the water was in the shed and they told me only a few inches.

Anyway, theres no rust color in the water, just some milky oil came out so far, I need to take it apart and clean it out and inspect everything thuroughly so I made this motor stand.

It was pretty simple to make and everything is ready to take apart clean out and get started again.

The only thing I havent figured out yet is what to do to ground out the motor, so all the electrics work. normally its grounded through the frame but now its mounted on wood.

Anyone have any ideas on how to ground the motor?

Anyone know of any fluids I could run through the motor to clean all the watery oil out without taking it completly apart?

Also notice the new radiator/oil cooler Im gonna play with.

When my motor went underwater it took several oil changes, don't waste good oil, I put old oil an cheap oil in, run for a few min. then drain, after about 6 changes was still getting some "milk" so took top off an the valve springs an cam area had alot of milk an clean out with rag. Did a couple more cheap oil changes an it got much better, then put in some more filters an good oil an ran a couple hours an another oil change an filters...I had alot of water...lol...but it cleaned up an still running great after 9 yrs.

Just run a wire from the negative terminal of the battery to the motor. A good spot is to one of the bolts where the starter mounts to the block.

I know people around here that dig up old 350s and 302s out of junkyards and they fill them up with diesel and let them sit for a day or 2 to break loose all the frozen parts and rust and then drain it. Idk if that would be good on the clutch though, but if you're going to replace the clutch then I'd give it a try.

There should be a few grounds in the wiring, take them and ground them to the bat,then run the big ground to the motor, you can ground it to any bolt,

P.S put a bolt in the front and back motor mount.

just out of curiosity why is it going to need to run in that setup? or what are you planning on doing with it?

my engine builder told me he uses some stuff called engine flush on the people that swamp theirs and bring it to him to deal with.

call DC Cycle 256-356-8911 and ask them what brand that stuff is.

I just want to be able to say that at one point in my life, I had a ATV motor on a table that started and ran.....lol.

But really, I might sell it and this makes it easy to sell on something like ebay or craigslist and all I have to do is box it in with plywood to ship a complete running motor if needed. :D

I took the clutch cover off to inspect the water damage, it looks like water only was in the very bottom of the motor and not in the internals at all. It looks like I could just spray carb and choke cleaner in the motor and it will run fine.

I guess Im going to spray it out and try to run it with some new oil and after a few minutes drain it and check it.

I also might use this motor for another build, if the radiator oil cooler works well with the cr80 rad, Im going to use a much larger CR250 radiator with a small fan for the build.

Well today I hooked it up with some gas and a battery charge, the motor started effortlessly on the first try and idled like a dream. No smoke, no starting issue's just purring like a kitten.

The oil system I made out of a 1984 cr80 radiator seems to be working great, oil flow's freely from the return line "to the top of the radiator" so I figure its being feed plenty of oil at the bottom.

This system take's a lil less then 1qt of oil weighs less then half of the weight the standard EX cooler weigh's and will create ALOT more cooler oil to the motor. The theory is that less oil traveling faster with direct air from a fan through the oil cooler will be more effective then going through a smaller cooler, then sitting in a tank that gets heated up by exhaust header's.

Only practical for drag racing and MX racer's but there's a ton of extra way's to do it, a tran's oil cooler with a fan and a small plastic oil tank would also work great and still weigh less then half the weight of a standard ex cooling system!

Here's video of the running motor, unfortunatly the oil has become VERY milky from flushing out all the crap from the flood we had. I bought some sludge removal type 5w20 motor oil in hope's that it cleans a lil more. A couple more oil change's and it should get alot of it out, I hope.

I like but dont like the oil system, Im gonna switch it out to the small plastic resevoir with a trans oil cooler instead.

Excellent job.

Have you run it in gear? Might help to flush out the crap.

Also, I think the standard oil cooler with a SPAL fan will work fine.
