View Full Version : Anybody run an Hour Meter?

I'm thinking of installing an hour meter on my 400. It would be nice to have so I can better monitor maintenance intervals.

Does anyone have one on their 400? Could you post some pics of where you installed it?

Thanks.

I bought one designed for a lawn mower for $10. You can buy the SAME hour meter sold as an ATV hour meter for $40.

I don't have any pics of mine to show but I mounted mine under the seat on the inside of my plastics. I used the provided velcro mounting pads.

Where did you find one for $10? I would like one too...

I bought one that is identical to the third one at my local farm store for $9.99. They also sell it in a nice plastic package for $40. Some sell it for $50+ because they have a logo on them.

They are all the exact same.

I ran mine though the snorkel and mounted it in the air box. I use velcro.

Thanks for the input guys. I got my hour meter off Ebay. I'll make a thread with pics once I get it installed.

Works Connection makes a mounting bracket for an hour meter. It's just a simple machined bracket but it's $15, which is alittle insane since it's prolly $3 in aluminum and a 5 minute program on a CNC.

I got my hour meter installed and took some pics of the process.

I went with a Trail Tech TTO hour meter/tach combo. It is the exact same one as the Works Connection only silver.

It was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. Nice looking unit.

It comes with 3M stick on adhesive, but I chose to bolt it on using the Works Connection billet hour meter mount. It will accept any bolt with a 6mm shank.

I chose to mount the bracket on the subframe next to the rectifier. I then mounted the hour meter to it. I had to angle it a bit, but that's not a big deal.

I then ran the wire alongside the wiring harness until I reached the spark plug wire. I allowed for enough wire to wrap around the plug wire several times and then cut off the excess.

After that I stripped away the black protective sheathing in order to get the best signal from the plug wire.

I sealed the end of the wire with silicone and wrapped the wire around the plug wire about 6 times like so.

And then finished the job by tightly wrapping the wire with electrical tape.

I also installed another TTO tach/hour meter to my KLX 110. It turned out nice as I was able to utilize the tank bolt for a mounting spot.

Here is the first start up test on the 400. The meter displays hours of run time when the engine is off, RPM's when running, and then flashes the max RPM right after you shut it off.

I would be interested to hear what you think about the rpm function, I have heard they don't go up high enough to show the actual rpm of these motors. Not sure if it is true or not.

I should put one on mine, it would be nice to see how much time I actually run it. I had my gps running at the dunes last weekend and at the end of the day I was surprised how much time I wasn't moving, I spent most of the day not moving.

It says it goes up to 20,000 RPM's. Here is another guy testing his TTO, it gets upwards of 16,000 RPM's.

I wanted them mainly for the hour meter function, I thought the tach feature would be a nice bonus.

That one must be better than some of the others I have seen. Some I have seen say they are only good to 6000rpm or something like that.

Both your 400 and 110 look nice. What little I can see of them anyway.

Those little bikes are fun. I have a little crf50 and we have a riot on it.

Damn, very sick and clean 400, deff. one of the greatest ones on here. I love the look of the old school blue plastics with the Nac's Racing graphics, you pulled the look off perfect. Looks just like one of Dana's old bikes.;)

Thanks a lot for the nice comments fellas, I appreciate it :)

I remember seeing a pic of this 400EX in the showroom of Nac's Racing back in the day and instantly fell in love lol. I knew I had to create a replica someday. Dana's 400 in Huevos 4 was sick. It definitely fueled my obsession at the time haha.

is it fully waterproof? When you wash the bike you can just leave it there?

Yep, it is fully waterproof.

I figured, but just checking. Trail Tech makes a cool handlebar mount kit on their website so you could see the RPM while you ride.

That's a gorgeous quad. Huge fan of the blue and silver color you used. Looks awesome.

I am assuming those are quadtech scoops, are they for a 400 or 250r? I don't that I have seen those before. I would love some but they probably don't make them anymore.

Thanks duneslider :)

Yeah they are the Quadtech scoops for the 400EX. Pretty rare nowadays. They don't make them anymore...lame :ermm:
