Last week I traded my 87 250R project for a "diamond-in-the-rough" 2005 450R that I am going to rebuild.

I finally had a chance to tear into the engine this week, and it looks like the previous owner tried to hone the cylinder and used the stock piston with new rings. The gap between the cylinder wall and piston is scary. He also had both oil rings on top of the oil expander ring

I'm looking to rebuild the top end without breaking the bank. I ride mostly trails, so I am looking for an excellent low-mid range setup.

Just bought an 02 CRF cam today. Still trying to decide what to do with cylinder/piston and head. I'm looking at either an 11.5:1 or 12.5:1 piston and stock bore. 3 ring is a must. Which ratio would be best for woods riding, and what brand does everyone recommend? Thanks!

go with a 12.5, compression helps power everywhere especially down low... you cant go wrong with any of the major brands of pistons, JE's are a little cheaper and are still good, i like to stick to either JE or CP pistons. make sure your valves are still good while the head is off. might wanna put new valve seals in if the head is good but if it has some time im sure the valves are due for replacement and seats cut. throw some new oem valve springs in if you do, they are cheap

I have a Wiseco 11.5 piston 3 rings. It was recommended by my builder for reliability purposes With a HRC cam, ported head and decked cylinder. And it makes 50.28 hp great mid and bottom. I'm gonna drop Down the front sprocket to a 13 tooth so it will be a ill more short geared for the trails. I love it though. Rage at at built mine. It's a 2004
