funny thing is i just put my head on and its ported. i was comparing stock to my ported head and i was so close to taking a pick but never did. so sorry :ermm:

Yes I do all my own port work. Much more with the 450's though. Unfortunately I don't have dyno results on the 400ex stuff but it runs very well.

Here is the exhaust side. All guides were left untouched.

Nice work.Would be great if more people posted some pics too.How far did you take it on the intake side,or is it just a clean up there?

That's far from a "clean up" but far enough for what I have built it for.

What tools do you guys use to do your own port work and is it hard to do just a cleanup and maybe a little more?

I have a set of matco carbide bits as well as a foredom rotary setup with multiple bits and sanding rolls. Then there are mic's and tools to measure with for consistency. Been doing this for a few years.

A clean up as in just sanding the factory texture down doesn't necessarily change or improve anything. And on a side note polishing the exhaust really only makes it look pretty before it's bolted back on. Only a perfect surface will prevent carbon buildup but there again so will correct jetting.

You can do it yourself,

But without a flow table you will never know if you helped or hurt your head.

Porting is not all about getting the most air through your head..

Different porting specs will give you different outcomes in power gains.

Just like any porting shop, they have different stages of porting, just like a camshaft kinda.

They have low end, mid to top end, and all top end.

The differences in these also makes your jetting change, and if not done properly, you may never be able to get your jetting right.

For example, you may have too much air flowing through on low end to make it lean, but then you may not have enough exhaust flow top end and make it rich.

It can throw your jetting off by miles low end, but dead on in top end.



The head on my quad has been ported, but I don't know by who. All it has a MM engraved on the head.

I went back over the exhaust, to clean it out, but I just left my intake alone.

My intake actually looks almost Identical to ds268 intake.

If I get bored I will pull my carb and boot off my head and snap a few pics of my intake.
