I asked on the forums about an upgrade for the stock 400ex timing chain, and was advised that the CRF450r timing chain was heavier duty then the 400ex chain by more then one user. I bought the crf450r chain and it is the exact identical chain that came in the 400ex from the factory. Any ideas where the misinformation came from and what chain I should have gone with?

its not the same, look at it against the stock chain-the crf chain is thicker. Thats what makes it stronger.

I did, I held them against each other. Only way to tell them apart was one was oily. They were both 3 and 4 plates, same thickness, same width, identical.

Agreed, sounds like you either got the wrong part or someone already replaced it with a crf chain. You did order a crf 450r chain approx from 02-06 right?

The crf chain is quite a bit thick, Id say it was at least 3/16" thick maybe 1/4" thick.

I agree with CJM. Here is a pic of the 2 side by side. 400 is on the right 450 is on the left.

I have owned this quad since it was less then one year old, and it has never been apart. I ordered the chain off ebay, and it listed it as 02-06 crf450r timing chain. If I recall correectly, when I got it I looked up the part number on the package and it said crf450r on the websight. But the picture proves, this definately is NOT the thicker chain.

Sounds like the fleabay seller screwed you over! Wouldn't be the first time it's happened in the history of fleabay.

Here's a good one for $65

That is the same part number that was on my factory sealed package.

Then either someone was into the motor before you and replaced it or someone screwed up and put the wrong chain in the bag.

Bag was sealed right?

u know rockymountain also has oem parts for really good prices # 3 less then 40 bucks

and they have i think one of the best service departments with easy and simple return policy so if its not what u want then u can send it back

and u can count the links on the chain i looks like 7 links wide on the stock one and what looks like 8 on the crf one hard to tell b/c the picture there is bad but i remember when i did it the crf had more plates

lol, my phone wanted to focus on the side of the chain halfway down instead of the front of the chains.:p
