Hey does anyone know of any clutch mods for the 400ex. Such as my cousin has. 450r and can use a CRF 450 clutch. Does anyone know of something similar?

Think you can use a 250R clutch plates an fibers, an can add one more to it because they are thinner....never did it though to mine though. I got some heavy duty springs an still have the stock clutch in my 99', was told it was the best you could do by Steve Abotts shop, waste of money on the Hinson an others, HD springs is way to go.

For around $45 you can buy a tusk heavy duty clutch kit with springs, its all anyone will ever need for a 400ex and is a REALLY great clutch and very durable.

Ive also heard of people using cbr900rr clutch fibers but I dont know if it really works or not.

i think magura or something makes some kind of a hydraulic clutch for $200?? I wouldn't chance one on my quad, my clutch cable already melts..

I'd like to find some kind of an easy pull mod.

I am running a Hinson basket and pressure plate with Honda springs and plates.

I have had this setup for 10 years and since doing it, I have not had to replace anything besides my clutch lever and perch. It still pulls as smooth as it did when it was brand new and does not slip at all.

Incase you don't know they make what you want. I believe it is by motion pro. Called the easy pull lever

And thanks for all the replies. I'm actually wondering about this to see if I can get a rekluse clutch. Sounds like I can. I'm 95% sure I can get one for a 250r

Should be able to run that line anywhere you want and make a line any lenth you want.

As far as you melting cables, i buy 300ex cables and cut and recrimp the lifter arm end back on. I keep the same exposed cable lenth that way for the same adjustment and the sheathing is about 3 inches longer which allows routing anywhere.

I run an 8 plate custom kit. If you use the 250R steels and add 1 more 400ex fiber it will drag and not disengage fully. It will make it very hard to find neutral and be notchy. The kit I'm running feels just like the stock clutch but has 1 extra friction plate.

The tusk clutch set up is a joke if your making good power. I have spent about $250 if not more trying to get the clutch to hold 70+ HP,

Then i made a call to curtis sparks and got there 8 disk set up with a new but stock clutch basket and pressure plate.

Now i can put the power that im making down to the ground.

And do you mean the trx250r or the crf250r clutch

Not trying to take over your thread, Drifterboy. Just have a question.

How different are the HD clutch springs vs stock? Mine feel pretty solid, and with a shorty lever. They are sort of a pita to engage and dis-engage.

Would I be better off with a regular clutch lever if I went with that Curtis Sparks kit?

I would agree, the only way to hold the Hp is to add plate with Hinson or other set up. I looked and looked for an EX lockout or even slipper clutch but was unsucessful. I looked for an override as well and would have had to pay serious jack for a prototype.

I have a override trans in my 426 and i love it and it was only $250 for it, we are going to put one in my 440 soon.

I can hook you up with the guy that did my trans, he is out of (S. bixby, OK) name is Keith Mulkey. I sent it out and had it back in 2 1/2 weeks.

Slaborde had a over ride trans in his EX, you might wanna message him and see where he got his.

Id still give 400exshop's guy a call, if it holds up the way they ride im sure its more then worth $250.

When you take off from the line you just pull up on the shifter and you dont need the clutch to shift, but you cant just trail ride it cuz it will tear it up...... call or text me and ill give you more info.

PM me the info, have been looking for a while. Also anyone found a lockup yet or even slipper or bearing clutch? Have a guy that will build one for me based of 450 modded but want both lockup and override if I am going to go with.

My friend has one on his Yz450f bike. Pretty nice and real easy pull, I want one for my bike.

I ran a barnett clutch basket and barnett dirtdigger clutch kit with HD springs. It worked great for about 5mo and blew up this evening. Only 2 of the basket teeth were still on the basket when I took the thing apart. All the friction plated teeth had been ruined as well. I would not recommend a barnett to anyone. I drag race so I abuse the clutch, but I feel it should have held up better than that. I think I am going to go with a gt thunder 8 plate kit, but what kind of basket should I get? Should I buy a new stock or would a hinson work good.

I have a GT thunder 8 plate kit. It includes what I believe are 250r steels and fibers and a machined pressure plate. Been running it for eons now with no issues. Still using stock basket as well.

CJM, on your pressure plate for your 8 plate clutch are the 5 slots that the springs fit into a little bit shorter than the ones on your stock 7 plate clutch? I got a Hinson pressure plate off of eBay and the slots are shorter than the ones on my stock plate. Come to find out, it is from a Hinson 8 plate clutch setup. So I am not sure if it is just for a 8 plate clutch, or if that is just how Hinson makes their pressure plates. Just trying to find out if I can use it with my 7 plate setup or if I am going to have to figure something else out!

Im sorry to say I am not sure. I would have to take everything apart to see.

I do know they mile the pressure plate down a bit to fit that extra plate, so I assume they cut down the spring area

Did your GTT setup come with new springs or did you use the ones that you had? If it did, do you know or remember if there was a differance in spring length? I am thinking since the slots are shorter in the Hinson pressure plate that it may require shorter springs, or maybe you just compress them more so they act like a stiffer spring setup.

CJM

It did come with new springs, they were longer but I am not sure how much.

If anything overtime springs do fatigue and wear out like anything else too. So my stockers which I knew were from day one were worn out anyways.
