Hey guys I'm looking at a 89 250 4 stroke on craigslist. I don't know much about it. I can't find much info on it . I saw a lot of info on the 2 strokes but nothing much about the 4 strokes. Are they the same as far as the frame and suspension goes? What I did find out was they were pretty popular in the 2 stroke version the guy wants 800 but he said the tank was rusty . The plastics have been painted and he has a lawn mower gas tank on it now. What would be a good offer. If you go to Chico california craigslist it was posted on the 9th but the pics kinda blurry. It's not for me my friend wants it.

Thanks for any info I can get

You need to try this section of the forum in the link below. It is dedicated to that family of honda 4 stroke atv's.

My advise from the info that you gave is to move on and forget that one.
Good luck.

i'll expand a little for you, just because I'm felling nice today. That 89 250x fourstroke, aside from being from Honda, has ZERO comparison to the 250r 2 stroke. if you want a little beater to putt putt around then try giving the guy $400 for it, they are slow/anemic and handle very poorly.

if you wanting handling, power, etc. anything like the 250r then dont waste your time with this....

It is hard to say without seeing it in person. But I would suggest staying away. They are not worth a whole lot in even excellent shape. Also the gas tank issue would scare me...what else is cobbled on it. And besides not a big deal but I don't think they made a 89-just 87/88 and 91/92.

Run!
I can pick mint 91-92 x's up in my area for $800-$1000.

Thank's everybody for the quick reply's. I'm pretty mechanically inclined I just don't know much about the different atv's honda offered over the years, but im learning fast. I looked at it today, it started easy but the plastic looked like ****!! It was missing the head light and like previously stated needed a tank. I offered him 350 he laughed:huh , I walked away. It wasn't worth what I offered anyway, but i wasn't trying to insult him. Anyway the bike wasn't for me anyway, I am the proud new owner of a very clean 2000 400 ex:) I was just trying to help my friends mom find a good deal for under a grand. so the search is still on.

You did the right thing walking away from that quad. Good luck with your search for them.

I'll second that. The 250X actually isn't a bad little quad, I used to own two of them, they're fun and sporty for a little quad.

But they're not really valuable. They're only worth about $1200 max in great shape, $800 in average shape, and this doesn't even sound like it's average. Sounds like the $350 you offered was fair, maybe a little on the low side but still in the range of fair. If he laughed, then it sounds like a deal was never going to happen anyways, you did the right thing to let that one go.

And you said you're looking for your friend's mom? You need to find something electric start. I'd search for a 300EX, 250EX (not a 250X, not the same thing) or similar. If she's not a very aggressive rider, you could even look for a Polaris Trailblazer, but they're heavy and slow. But I definitely recommend something electric start, and I think a 400EX might be out of your price range unless you get really lucky.

If you're willing to drive a few hours, the Reno/Tahoe area isn't too terribly far away. There's a nice 300EX listed for sale in Yerington for $1000 that would probably be perfect.

Thanks guys. kick start wont be a problem. But it does need reverse. I found a 2002 kawasucki 250 mojave for $900. I here there not a bad quad. but do they have reverse?
