whats up guys haven't been on in awhile. Me and a couple of my buddies went for my birthday ride today and you know a ride isn't a ride without at least on wreck. So right before we headed back to the truck I attempted a straight up hill climb and rolled the 400 backwards almost smashing me lol. I bent the grab out of the bars and steering stem. What do you guys think is a good stem and bar combo for the budget? thanks guys!

Well my Houser/Tag T2 setup is about as strong as they come. I've rolled that thing down a 50' near 90 degree solid dirt hill and all it did was twisted my front brake master down. Didn't even move the bars, but that is nearly a $300 setup. I'd say get a good strong stem for around $200 and then get a decent/cheap set of bars until you can get some 1 1/8" bars, then you'll be set.

this last time I wrecked mine, I just cut and rebuilt my stock steering stem with a solid 1 inch thick steel rod from top to bottom. I got the steel rod from where I work

I find a stock stem is worth it, they are cheap and bend if you drop the quad. Stronger stem means the frame can possible bend.

As for bars, always had pro tapers and never bent them.

Watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DaE5Q41eaY

Notice how many times it flipped over and rolled? Not a thing was truly wrecked except that nice grab bar from PRM-but it did its job. The stem was bent down sideways at the top, we just hooked a ratchet strap up to a tree and yanked. The bars, but the bars lol they aint bent. You saw it tumble, but them protapers held up.

Make sure you check the frame by the gas tank, that likes to bend when to fall like that.

Stock stems do bend easy, gone through 3. Now have a Lonestar stem with clamps off ebay for 100.00, chrome like new. Have Renthal bars on both my quads, they have nver bent, even when the stock stems did, I give Renthal bars a big A+.

Unless I can find a good deal on ebay or craigslist im gonna have to go with a stock stem. I just can't throw $300 into that right now. If anyone has an old one they would like to sell let me know asap!

Send your stem to JD performance. He will cut the tierod part off and weld on a chromoly section to whatever height you want-its $150

Stock stem is worth a good frame, and the Pro Tapers didn't hardly bend at all in my big crash. Although my KTM Magura bars were cheap (on eBay, $160 from a dealer) and they're really strong. With an oversized clamp you can spend less than you would on standard Pro Tapers and trust me, the bend will be perfect.

I don't see how having a stong stem can tweak a frame just because the stem bares the brunt of the impact and doesn't flex. It's only pinched in 1 spot and bolted through a plate on the bottom. The most I could see happening is that plate gets bent and breaks the welds on the frame, not bending the frame.

Idk from what I understand the 400ex has a pretty weak connection to the steering stem and they can bend break easily.

I have a Lonestar stem on mine with anti-vibe bar clamp.

I bent my original also rolling over backwards on a hill.

I have ProTaper SE bars and they have held up great.
