This is going to be my build thread for my super long time in the making custom Laeger dual 250R/Z400.

The History

Back a few years ago I started building a nice trail quad from a Laeger 250X frame. I started getting into it and decided the power would never be enough so I took a hit and scrapped the project.

I decided I wanted a bigger liquid cooled motor and set out to find a 250R frame that someone converted into a fourstroke so I wouldn't have to wreck a good frame.

I found this:

<a href="http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/?action=view&amp;current=Picture009.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/Picture009.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br/><br/>
<a href="http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/?action=view&amp;current=Picture006.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/Picture006.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br/><br/>
<a href="http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/?action=view&amp;current=Picture005.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/Picture005.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br/><br/>
<a href="http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/?action=view&amp;current=Picture004.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/Picture004.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<br/><br/>

The guy told me it was a Laeger narrow front stock link 250R converted to a YZ426. I drove 8 hours to get everything but the motor and plastic. I wanted to put a 250R motor back in and ride for a while then do a refurb/conversion.

However:

The reason I'm calling it Identity crisis is because I found out it was made originally for a 350X motor, then poorly converted to a YZ426. Now I converted it to a Z400/250R based machine. So it doesn't know what it wants to be

I parted everything out and ended up with just a frame. It sat for a couple years as I found parts and money to build it the way I wanted.

<a href="http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/?action=view&amp;current=Frame.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/250Renvy/Laeger%20IDC/Frame.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

This is where it started going together but should also be called, "I'll get to it tomorrow/next week build"

Last summer I took it to a welder/fab guy to get the refurb done. I needed to add a headstay mount, remove the propegs and add footpeg mounts (All from Laeger) as well as new nubs for the front fenders and threaded bosses for the fender stays as well as radiator mounts for a liquid cooled motor.

It took him 10 weeks because he kept promising it would get done next week. Finally I picked it up and took it somewhere else and got it done in 4 days. Brought it back early this spring to get some welding and machining done which took 2 months because someone else kept giving the same promises. Took it to a powdercoater and after 3 weeks of not doing it and then changing the color, I took it to someone else to get done the right color, which I really like.

Starting to go together

The powdercoat was done too thick since it had 2 coats plus clear. I had to scrape and sand a lot of parts.

Sounds like this is going to be a cool build for sure. I like that powder. It kind of looks like the blue Suzuki uses/d on the z400 or the LTR. Idk maybe I'm making that up.

Either way, I'm tuned in!

Where did you get the powdercoating done?

I'm not really sure on the color, but I think it's called misty midnight. I was kinda going for the suzuki look, but it's a little different.

Dustin, don't hold your breath yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but unfortunately I go for too many custom builds which don't always work out. This one should be different though.

I actually had this completely built in May, then took it all back apart to start the final finish process.

I put it together to test different looks.

not that it matters, but the "RX" laeger frames were taller, about 1". Also the frame rails set lower than the footpegs to make the pivot point in the swingarm correct. This caused the frame to hit the ground before the shock travel was completly used up. Consider this when u do the rear suspension. Consider added a .250" spacer under neath the shock bumper to help with this problem. This .250" will limit the travel enough to not break up the frame around the footpegs.

Going to be sweet Kevin, I'm tuned in. I was hoping you'd throw that GasGas motor in a Laeger frame... :D

I love the custom builds myself!!! haha...

I tried it, and it didn't work. It might in a regular frame, but this setup is a little different since it's built for a 350X.

Pic with plastic and tank.

Got shocks, a-arms, and rims/tires on as well as my gold Laeger decals. The look great against the black and blue.

Wouldn't mind some opinions on the touches of red from the Elka shocks and hubs. I'm pretty sure I like it since it warms it up a bit, because looking at it with just the front shocks - it looks cold.

Or should I get rid of any red?

What about gold hubs? It would give it a little old school flare.

i'd get rid of all the red and make it the same color as the laeger stickers. also make the blue on the front springs the same color as the frame.

Ended up finding some brand new Elka elite for a used price so I got rid of the Fox shocks and Put them on. I wouldn't mind some color on the springs but this works too.

It needs some buttoning up in a lot of places, the front tie rods are being a pain to get right - I think cause it's a narrow frame with +2 tie rods, +1 might work better.

I need to build a bracket for the silencer because it wasn't meant to have a 250R silencer and put brakes and handle bar controls on once I get my grips off the fatbars to install the shock and vibe.

So this is basically how it will look with the exception of some custom graphics and seat cover.

You bike looks great! What are you doing for graphics?

What do you think of the GasGas? How's the motor? You need to find a QT hood for that GasGas... :D

250Renvy

Pm'd you about the graphics.

I already have a carbon fibre piece on the GG. I'd have to find a 400ex QT hood which I had but sold.

I like the GasGas motor - the handling could be better. Next summer I'm going to get some new a-arms made for it so it's less twitchy.

Looking really good envy!

Where at in the NE? I'm looking for a Local PC'er to do my frame that doesn't want millions (most of the places I know of are car related - wheels / valve covers).

Nice build 250Renvy. What kind of heel guards are those? Do they bolt up to the subframe? Would they work on a stock bike? Thanks.

250Renvy

Langbolt - I know and yes I definitely want to ride there next year. It's identity might change for a long trail ride though.

bhatch21 - the heelguards are ims - I bought them from dirtfactory as ??? but they do not bolt to a stock frame. I did some research and found out they are specifically for a roll frame.

I need to try to find some 400ex heelguards to work better.

I also have IMS heel guards... the same ones, and they bolted up to the stock frame???? 1987....
