Does anodzing only cover the outside surface or is a chemical thing that goes through all the aluminum?

It is an aluminum thing, I guess its chemical. It affects the aluminum changing its color. You can buy aluminum frame's anodized in almost any color :D. It not a paint kinda thing, I can't explain it very well sorry. Try researching it :D

Anodizing is an elecrochemical process that causes aluminum oxide to form on a piece of aluminum stock. Then given the porus nature of the oxide it can then be dyed with various colors. The anodized layer is then harder and more durable than the raw aluminum,,,,,,,,and it only works for aluminum.

i know that was very simplified,,,,,,,,,,but you get the idea

right on cbw...
anodizing is the same sort of thing as the chroming process, but with 1 step, not three. it gets wired up, dipped, and removed, wholla!!! anodized aluminum

then you got hard anodize that is like an egg shell..... 10 times stronger than any powdercoating but only for alum and not as many color choices

Type III anodizing,,,,,,or hard anodizing is normally black and dark green........it is built thicker up to .002" but usually .0005" and is done at lower temps and higher current than type II.

There are some paints that mimic the annodized finish but they are a real pain to get them to look right.

Its a multi stage process and one little goof up and its all gone to $hit
