Hi fellas. i just picked up this can am ds450x for $500 :D, but the motor is basicly junk. im tossing around the idea of possibly making it a hybrid with a trx250r motor, yz426 motor, or possibly a crf. i have a mechanic background in the motorcycle field but no welding knowledge. would it be difficult to convert the frame or should I just build another rotax from the salvageable parts? opinions welcome

thanks but no thanks. bought it from a guy up in north ga near a chicken farm. he said its just been sitting under the porch since the motor exploded and he wasn't ever going to fix it. im pretty sure the rolling chassis could of at least went for 3x what i paid for it but he probably didn't think it was worth much with the blown motor  :D.

1st, YOU SUCK! lol. Why can't I find this kind of deal.
2nd, You can pick up a ds engine for under $1000 and be done with a lot less headache.
I put a CR85 engine in mine for my son to race. I'd love to put a crf250f motor in one but we could not race it because it would not be production...

Definitely put a 2-Stroke in it!

The weight would be amazing!

If you can find a ROTAX 257 do it!

http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=466354&highlight=rotax

But easier would be to use a 250R.....then you could turn it into a 330R or 350R for even more fun!

Keep us posted on whatever you do!

(Logan's dad) you have to be a vivid Craigslist searcher to find some of the best deals. Sometimes I check every 15-20min for new items to post, and if the person is a stand up guy they'll lock you in to the buy since you contacted them 1st. I Got a running 89 ktm 500dxc for $475 and a laeger frame, subframe, and lpc swinger for $800 same way. I looked around a little for a motor but only one I saw was $2400 :(.

(Langbolt) from what I've heard those 257 Rotax motors are rare to come by. I have a 250r motor that's in need of a rebuild but I was to use that for my laeger project whenever I get around to it.

I'll definitely update with pictures whatever route I decide to go.

I can sell you a complete running DS450 motor or sell you a conversion kit to run a 2011 KX450F bike engine if you prefer!

Obviously there would be a little shipping involved though ;)

Heck! For that price you could get the whole bike! And on this side of the pond to boot!

Do you guys think my ktm 500 2 stroke motor would be difficult to set up in this chassis? It's a left kick

I'm sure it can be done. The axel and carrier can be flipped so the sprocket will be on the other side with a lil work. Pipe clearance at the front of the motor would be the only big hurdle.
What kind of horsepower does that 500 put out?

I want to say 60 crank HP stock. Yeah I figured pipe might be a issue

My CR85 pipe would not quite fit so I had to push the frame bar that the vin sticker is on a lil forward. I just cut the end off at an angle, pushed it forward and bolted the frame piece to the side of the lower tray. You'll have to take the top rivet out up behind the shock so the frame piece can rotate.

well its official! the ds chassis will be used for a hybrid. just picked up this one owner 06 yfz450 for $750 :D, but it needs a new crankshaft or the current one rebuilt. this one is super clean too, from the looks of it the owner only rode it on the street. it has no frame wear or scuffs from rocks or dirt anywhere on it.

no no no. the yfz is going to be rebuilt as a 480 bigbore but the DS now can sit patiently in the corner of the garage until i can find a rotax 257 or possibly another 450 motor cheap enough. sorry i guess i didnt specify my plans ;)

I'd come down south and take that CanAm out of the corner...you know, to free up some floor space for ya. Just trying to help. :p

No thanks, Was going to do an aftermarket framed R but I like the idea of the ds250r with the rotax. Just have to find a motor and get DGS to make me a kit

UPDATE!!!

just scored a rotax 257 motor for a great deal so looks like the ds250 will be underway in the near future. this will be a slow build for me since i'm in the closing stages of a new house and don't really have a ton of free time with work and all. I will update and post pics as progress occurs. super excited!
