Looking to build a mod this winter for my son who will be turning 8 this fall and looking for some recomendations on which engine to use. He races enduro and will be competing against riders 9-12. I have located a yamaha blaster widened and lengthened. To me it looks like the perrfect donor for the build. Keeping in mind that he may not run it until later in the season until he gets used to a shifter. He runs a drr90 now and handles it quite well and know the 2 engine options produce much more power so there will be a major learning curve. Of the 2 engines which would be the better of the 2 for fit, performance, and rider friendlyness?

unless your classes are different it will be a while until he can race the 150, here you have to be 12 i think. but the 150 is a much better motor

He is moving up classes early and they allow 150cc 2 or 4 stroke. Just have not heard much about the 150 in a blaster chassis. Most kids are running pitster pro bikes with cr85-100 engines or raptor 125. The raptor 125 looks really under powered even with engine mods. This is why i am leaning towards the 150r engine. If anyone has put the 150 in the blaster chassis and reads this maybe they can shed some knowledge on this project for me.

1st, make sure you would be allowed to run a non-production machine with the rules set by your organization.
2nd, the 150R engine would be an awesome powerplant for that type of racing (assuming that enduro racing is woods racing). It puts out double the power of the engines you stated. The 4stroke would be much easier than the 2stroke to manage through the slow stuff. The low end grunt would help.
If your allowed a "modified" machine.....You may consider using the Raptor125/250 chasis with the 150r engine. The chasis geometry has gotta be better than the Blaster and there are a ton of aftermarket parts available for the Raptor....

We are allowed to run this setup as there is 2 of them running it now. Enduro is woods racing and is the main reason i am leaning towards the 150. Not sure of the geometry difference of the raptor vs the blaster chassis. There are very few on the market up here aand if there is one it is a stocker. The blaster i found is already setup with everything required. Just need to do the transplant. Seems that most 150 setups are on chromoly chassis and no other manufacturer frame.

I have seen them in 250r and 450r chassis.

Let me know how this works out. Tyler wants to go with a 4 stroke next year and the 150r is what I am leaning towards, our chassis is a blaster as well ....................Jeff

Post pics if you can

For my sons age he is not ready for a full size chassis. Hoping the blaster or raptor chassis would be adequit.

If i get the info i need to start the build i will keep you informed. The 150 powerplant is a sure thing, just have to make up my mind on the chassis. I like the aftermarket selection of add ons for the raptor but a complete built bike would save lots of $$$$.

I just finished putting a CR85 motor in a DRR90 frame, this thing is a missle! I made all brackets and gussets, re worked swing arm to accept sprocket on the opposite side a few other changes and it is done, easy inexpensive mod!!! My Grandson who is 9 LOVES to ride this beast.

I thought about that but would really like to run a 4 stroke just because of running enduro/xc. Was not convinced the drr chassis would hold up to the extra power.

And it won't. Plus the limited suspension and bad chassis geometry.

Thats what i figured. I looked through the classified ads almost a year ago and found a fisher 150r up for sale. It would have been perfect and cheaper. Was hoping that someone would have already done what i am hoping to do.

My son just moved up to the shifter class this last year and we are running 2007 Cobra chassis with a 2007 Honda 150R in it. This thing is simply amazing! There are mods needed to the frame to make it fit but once in all works well.
The weight and balance and power is awesome, my son is smaller so I didn't want him on a bigger quad like a Raptor.

Could you possibly send me some pics of it and a few details of what you had to do along with some problem areas

For what its worth, if you can find a Cobra roller, in my opinion, it is the best handling best suspended chassis out there. The newer one you can buy the better because they use lighter chromoly in the newer chassis.
Your gonna want to REALLY gussett it up though.

The frame is at the powder coaters now, when I get it back I will post pics. The frame has gussets in all the right places, kit has been three years since it was torn down. Two small cracks by the rear shock mount and that was it.

PAUL MARRA AT WILEY MODS BUILT ONE FOR HIS SON A FEW YEARS BACK. HE PROBABLY HAS A USED ROLLER AROUND. HIS BOY WAS REAL FAST ON IT AND IT HELD UP WELL. HIS # 609 387 3060.

HOPE IT HELPS

Ok so I got my sons quad back together, it is a 2008 modified Cobra frame with a 2007 Honda 150r motor. The swing arm was modified to use the 150 honda bike needle bearings rather than the bushings. The frame was notched and gusetted in a few places. The only issue we have had is the frame was cracked on the top rear shock mount. I think this was due to the rear shock going bad and the quad was bottoming out quite a bit. The bottom of the fuel tank needs to be pushed up a little bit to give added clearance along with extra space added to the tank mounts to raise it up some. This thing has been great, runs real hard and is extreamly fast. I will see if I can get some pics loaded.

We saw this quad run the Quadcross NW series, It was a bad a-s-s super mini. Soon as we are done with cvt's we will be going this route... Keep up the good work---

That looks real good. I bet with the light frame it run awesome.

Get ready for the 150 guys to ask you about the clutch cover.
Also, In my experience being around these Cobras, The weakest point on the frame is where you found a crack. Before its all said and done you will be cutting that whole tube out and installing a very thick walled tube in there. Also, the heel quards on the stock nerfs seem to break out. Just some stuff to look for.
Good job!
Try to post some videos of him riding it.

Thats exactly what we did, cut out the old pice of tube and welded in a new thicker one. The clutch cover is very cool and was made by the guy I bought the quad from. He is a perfectionist and does amazing work!
No video's now but here is a pic from last summer.

That is absolutly awesome! It looks great. I picked up a 11 cobra 70 that was next to new. My son took it out for the first time and not being used to a clutch he was having a tough time trying to keep it on the pipe. This is why a 150 is what i would love to do with ours. Easier to run fast with low rpm torque through the corners. Do you run a air box or just open filter and is the rad sufficient enough to keep it cool?
Thanks SO MUCH for posting picks of it. I may have to pm you when i get to building ours if my son still strugglles with keeping the 70 on the pipe in and out of the corners.

Ive got to hand it to you.....Sticking a 150 in there is not a small feat. I never would have thought there would be enough room height wise. Great job, it looks good.

so, how did this quad come out? not sure of our plans for next season either 150 or 250

This quad turned out awesome! It will out perform anything it runs against.
We wil be moving on this fall to a bigger machine but we have no regrets with going with the 150 over any other options available, this thing runs awsome!

whats are you doing with the vents tubes on the 150

gdr8

We just run a vent tube straight down and out with the vent tubes from the carb.
