i wanna rebuild my 2008 400ex for more power. i was looking at a wiesco piston 416 11:1 compression with stage 2 hotcam and heavy duty timing chain . I WANT YOUR OPINION... is this a good idea bad idea and why. and also dont tell me to get the 440 kit because thats not gonna happen.

If your cylinder isn't worn too bad I'd see if a 406 is an option. You aren't going to notice any extra power with 10 extra cc's but if you go with a 406 you will have more room to bore next time. You will love the power with the 11.1 and the stage 2 Hot Cam. And yes the timing chain is a good idea while you are in there. It is cheap insurance. Might also be a good idea to think about valve seals if they have never been replaced.

So you want to go straight to a 416 and then when that gets worn out in a couple of years or so you're going to have to press a new sleeve in. What is the point of that? Atleast go with a 407 first so you can bore it twice instead of once.

Ill be on a 450 in at least 3 years it should hold for 3 years from now but im waiting on a reply on what I should do from a buddy of mine who races gncc and he has all his quad built to the max. I asked him after posting this but im just trying to get opinion and im open for all of them

416 is a good setup with that cam. I raced that combo for years with no problems.

That's more than likely what im gonna do with it. My next investment is a 450 so as long as the 416 holds strong till then I will be happy haha

For sport class, you can't have a 416. Only 400cc and below!

I know your a new member, so you didnt know but that setup is the most common setup there is.. im sure there is a million threads saying how good it is.

There is a search function down at the bottom right hand corner, and there has been a thread on basically everything you need to know.

You get your answer quicker that way.

Not true, its just like the 450CC pro class, you can bore them out, but they have to be originally a 400.

IE no hybrids.

Im assuming because marshal goings ran a 440 motor.

And if i am remembering right, so did Garon Davis when he ran the Sport class.

Unless the bore is worn, just throw in an 11:1 piston in stock size. Otherwise go to a 402 or 407. Bore size does not equal power, compression does.

Do a hotcam stage II as well.

I was thinking the 407 11:1 and the hotcam and the timing chain

That's the setup I'm running with a 450 carb. and an EHS lid and it has alot of power for a 400. It will deff. surprise you when you get it done. I'd also recommend playing with the gearing after you get it done so you are getting the most out of it.

Thanks for the tip man! And also have you had any problems at all with the 407?

Nope, not a single one. All my problems have been from the carb., trying to get the jetting spot-on is a PITA.

I haven't messed with my jets there still stock and I have the hmf slip on. It recommended jetting but its fine with out

Jetting is important, more mods you do to wake up the engine the more fuel it needs.

Ever notice its a total pain to start a 400 when its cold? Pilot jet is too lean from the factory. The main jet is no better either. I know its supposed to work for almost all areas but it certainly dont. Rejet it, its easy and only costs a few bucks and ensures you wont blow it. Im willing to bet with an exhaust its lean.

Honestly I have no problems starting cold or hot I normally put it on full choke till it starts then half for a minute or so the take it off and it runs fine. But how do you tell if its running lean or not. Im not to smart with all of this yet lol

Before for you make a statement make sure you are right. This is true sport class is for 400cc and below!!!!!!! No displacement changes are allowed

You were right only about garon running the sport class. His motor had stock displacement. Read again http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=456991&perpage=10&highlight=Gncc%20build&pagenumber=11

Yes I am sure marshal had a 440. He is knowen for not running legal motors! That is why Toby dropped him! If you want more proof send me a pm.
Sorry to burst your bubble!

Gotta pull the plug and check it byt cutting off the threaded area so you can see the porcelain. If its tan or brown your good, whites lean and black is rich.

Marshal did run the 440 that's why he is not running sport anymore. Garon was stock bore. But I know many people who ran 416 426 and 440 and was never checked. Most officials wont check unless they have reason to believe something is different which in marshals case there was. A 400ex with a great rider but pulling on 450s is what got him. Im sure he coulda stayed in front on stock 400 but like I said he pulled on the 450s

How exactly do you consider it "Bursting my bubble" when i stated in my post "Im assuming"

ANyways, the main reason i posted that is because you said
"Cant run a 416 in sport class!!!!!!!!!!!"

Which, if you tear into all the motors (400ex, Z400, DVX, etc) 90% of them guys are not running a standard bore motor, and whats the big deal if they are?

Racing a 400ex (440, 426, 416, whatever) in the AM race isnt going to get you famous.

The reason Marshal is so "famous" (since i know your going to say, "What about Marshal goings!) is because he is 15, racing a 450 at local races and keeping up (and beating 50% of the race i might add) Kevin Cunningham who raced in the XC2 class and got 4th.

Im not denying being wrong, because obviously i was, and i stand corrected, but the point being, If you do a 416, you CAN run sport class. They aren't going to make you pull your motor apart.

Thanks for informing me about Marshal though, i really didnt know that, that was considered cheating. I really did think that you could bore them out, but i thought it just had to be a 400ex motor.

I know who marshal is, been watching him since he started racing. He will be on the front line one day.
As far racing a 416 in the sport class it is CHEATING!!!!!!! I guess I have morals. If you want to be legal just run in c class problem solved. Then you can earn a plague the honest way! As far as motors being tore down it does happen. All that has to happen is a protest. Marshal has been protested twice that I know of and was caught cheating both times.

If hes benn protested for cheating twice i do but dont think he deserves the attention or front row in pm for a good while. But thats just me.

who cares though? really its the sport class. its what i run...and i plan on running a 416 in that class next year as well....am i gonna win the class? hell no....not even close!

*****ign about someone on a 416,426, or 440......its just sour grapes......its no more fare than the margarias running 250r's in that class, especially joey! dude cleaned that class out a few years back and is now back in it again after takign a year off.....does he have advantage with a 250...yes.....does he ride better than almost everyone else in the class?.... YES!

so..if htey can do that, who cares?...(disclaimer: im not *****ing bout the margarias...i know them.....glad joey's doing good again and would love to see him step up to xc2 again....but im tryign to make a comparisson about whats legal in the class and whats not.....if you can run a 250r in that class..you should be allowed to bore your 400's....just my honest opinion)
