I'm debating whether to look for 86-87 hubs/spindles/calipers (I already have the calipers), or using the 400ex Hubs/spindles (I have already) w/ YFZ calipers....

I was searcing some older posts, lots of posts saying what fits and what doesn't... but I want to be sure before I start buying parts....

1. Will YFZ450 CALIPERS bolt on to 400exspindles/hubs w/ zero modification? (no adapter plate)??

2. Is the handling/geometry compromised at all using the 400ex spindles/hubs rather than the 86-87 250r's?

BTW... This is on an 87 frame w/ Laeger +2+1 standard travel...

Thanks again guys!!

i can answer all your questions but i can tell you what i know. i wanted to do the 400EX swap and did my own research. in short its a pain in the *** to figure out what works and what does not just off of what others say. 400EX calipers will require custom brackes which are hard to find now days. 400EX calipers are single piston. 250R are dual. YFZ's are dual piston but then you have to worry about spindles, shims, and, correct camber.

some say they want to do the swap because of the weight savings. the savings in weight is not all the significant and has been posted before.

is all up to you if you want to spend the money on parts that your not sure will work or not for minimal gains. you already have 250R calipers. keep it all R IMHO. if you want to upgrade 86-87 spindles then get some 89 spindles. Keep it simple. Keep it R.

Nope, yfz brakes bolt right on 400ex spindles and hubs, no mods needed.. hands down best brake option for the money.. my cousin can do stoppies off jumps all day on mine.. I'm too chicken to try.. I think I bought yfz calipers,+3 ss lines, and master for $55 shipped.. i think 04-09 are the ones you want.

Thank you guys.... Ok, so I think Im gonna run the 400ex hubs/spindles/rotors that I have now, and look for YFZ calipers!

Make sure you get the right ones.. Because they make a single piston caliper for the xc yfz but I think they started that after 09 ..
Did you get the silencer yet?

YFZ calipers on 400ex spindles is an awesome setup. Bolts right up. I used 05 YFZ calipers, 400ex master cylinder, and 250R +2 SS lines. The lines were held away from rubbing anything with the 400ex stock line holder under the upper ball joint. Looking at a buddies 700r raptor, I'd say there the same as the YFZ. Look the 2 up on servicehonda to verify. Overall great mod. But if you have 250R calipers already, I believe the 400ex spindles are the same as the 88-89 250R spindles so be sure the calipers have 88-89 mounting plates.

I have a pair of 86/87 Spindles/knuckles, hubs, and rotors in the for sale section. That way you could retain the factory brakes (which are just as good as the yfz). And then if you wanted, you could probably re-sell the 400ex setup you have and break even. Just a thought.

I ran 250R calipers on 2 of my R's.One with the 86 spindals and one with 89 spindals.I switched to the 400ex spindals with the YFZ calipers and I must say that my front 250R calipers never stopped me like the YFZ calipers do.Also alot of the Pro riders switched to the 400EX spindals,so there is no need to worry about a geometry issue. Before the YFZ calipers as you've already found out, there was the expensive adapter plate to run the 250R calipers on the 400EX spindals.Honestly it is not a joke, the YFZ calipers bolt right up to the 400EX spindals without the need for spacers or any of these so called myths.I had 400EX calipers and the YFZ calipers and carefully checked for alignment issues. There was none!

I was wrong, mine are 04 YFZ calipers. I got them on ebay for $53.
