I bought a completely stock 400ex exactly one year ago. I ride at my house on trails, jumps, track ect. with it. I decided to get into drag racing with it. I have done everything to it myself when ever I got time or money. Its not the most elaborate quad out there, but I am 15 and dont make a whole lot of money, mostly fix my friends bikes for money. I drag race on the weekend and trail ride during the week. Tell me what you think of what I have done so far.

Looks pretty good! Might eventually want a 450 swinger on there for a tad more length. I'm 15 too and do all my work, shops aren't worth it and often don't do all that great of a job..or diagnosis..

thanks, I tried uploading a pic of it but the site says the image is too large. Is the 450r swingarm longer?

Go resize your pictures online or add them to photobucket (or equivilant) and post the links here.

I'd get an 06+ 450r swinger if you want a longer one.. You can find one for under $100 all day long in nice shape.

I'd rather swap the whole rear end rather than the swinger though.. not a fan of the 1/8" gap when using the 400ex carrier.

Ya man go to photobucket.com it auto resizes for you just get the img code off the picture once its uploaded.

I bought a +7 swingarm brand new for $400 from Ace fabrication on Ebay.

You dont need anything over 4in for a 400ex, I planned on doing motor swaps when I bought mine.

If its only for drag racing look up threads by me and 400exshop for ideas and ways to do things.

These are pics from yesterday after I finished putting the lowering kit on. It still has the itp gncc 20" rear tires and stock 22" on the front in these pics, Im putting the 18" rear and 20" front on tomorrow. I also took the heel guards off and the bumper and put number plates on.

Ok, that is really all the more I would want anyways and its cheaper than an aftermarket one. I checked ebay and you can get a 450 swingarm and bearing carrier together for around $150.

You should also look into getting some drag struts and either paddle tires or 4 snows for drag racing.

I run a consistant 5.6 on a true 300ft drag strip and a 8 sec 1/8th mile drag strip.

For some odd reason most 300ft tracks are 260-280ft, which is relevant for track ETA's but 5.9 is still good regardless of track size.

If your worried about drag struts because you still trail ride, a simple battery powered impact gun and some wrenchs makes it easy to swap from struts to shocks within 10 mins, its only 7 bolts and the swap is complete.

it wouldnt matter I take the lowring kit off and back on all the time whenever I want to trail ride. Last night I ran constant 5.9s and a couple 5.8s on true 300ft track. I dont think thats bad for a stock bore. I got beat by a fully built 426ex that was lowered about 3in off the ground. He was running 5.5, 5.4

I was running stock 15/38 gearing with 20" tires. I tried running my new 18"s and they take off super fast but it tops out and runs outa speed around 3/4 of the track. I would love to run the 18" to keep me lower to the ground and they are better tires I just need to gear my bike up alittle. I was think 16/38 or 15/36, maybe even need 16/37 if either of those dont give me as much as I want.

If my stock bore built 400 runs 5.8, 5.9 constant and a guy at the track runs a built 426 that runs 5.4, 5.5. Does anybody argure that if I make mine a 440 stroker it should run around a 5.0. These times are based on a true 300ft track.

Johns 400 was a 440 stroker if I'm not mistaken. That guy must have been hooking up really well and getting a good launch with that 426 to run those times.

Well I was told it was a 426. You never know somebody could be leaving a couple cc's out haha, but his bike only sits maybe 3" off the ground and gets good traction but there has to be some engine work behind it.

Listen to John whatever you do. He knows his stuff.
But i ran 14/38 gearing with my razrs and holeshots and it seemed fine but now that i got them 22 4 snows, i'm trying out 13/39 gearing this saturday.

John: My track is an actual 300ft. I thought it was different but it isn't i guess. Since it was muddy we ran 250 foot a few weeks ago.

Mine is a 440 cylinder kit with kibblewhite +size valves, cam, carb etc....

It is possible for the high mod 426 to run a 5.5, but its not just a 426.

The 440 alone wont run 5.0, theres super mod banshees running 5.0s.

You could easily beat that 426 with a 440 and some weight mods, or atleast run even with him.

My guess would be he's either really high compression or hes got the 426 stroker with more mods.

3in off the ground and running a 5.4, he aint fuggin around with a mild motor, he deff left a few mods out of that equation.

Depending on where your from, it may have been 400exshop....lol.

yea thats what I thought, if its a 426 he has done everything right to it. I dont no details on it I may ask him at the next race. There are a couple guys with 2 and 3 cylinder snowmobile engines on there banshees and are super fast. a 3 cylinder snowmobile on a stretched quadzilla frame has been running the fastest at 4.1sec on a true 300ft. There is also an amazing 450r 501 stroker with everything tuned right running 4.4, 4.5. There is acouple highly modified streched banshees running things like 16mil and they run around 4.1 as well.

I am wanting to make my 400 into a 440 stroker eventually. 87mm 12.5:1, +4mm powroll tough rod stroker crank, +1mm valves, hardfaced rockers, hd valve springs, hd head studs, port polish, stage 3 cam. 39mm fcr carb, full exhaust, no air box just filter, ect.

I dont have the money for all that right now so I think I am going to send my crank to powroll and get the tough rod +4mm installed and run my stock bore piston with it for a while til I get the money and gradually build up. I am looking at getting it stroked with my stock bore making it a 420 stroker.

I just went to the track friday night with my 426ex and ran 7.55 in the 1/8 mile and then we sprayed it and ran 7.10 in the 1/8 mile.

it will go in the 6.s if i can get it to not pop and break up 60 feet from the end.

we run 300 ft dirt with it as well on motor it went 5.20 but the bike is faster now and have not been back to the birt.

what track do you run dirt on? do you come to any dirt tracks in NC. ? there is a big dirt race at Rockingham NC. and we run at busco beach as well.

I live in va and warren county fair grounds in front royal is where they run the dirt drags. They run races almost every weekend and have a big enough place to run a 300ft track.

I ran a shorter dirt track for the first time yesterday and was very impressed with my times. The track was 260ft I think. I ran 5.4, 5.5 mostly and ran a 5.3 once. I was beating all stock 450s and mildly built 450s. Even beat a built raptor 700r. I got 4th out of 25 in a stock class which is (0-700cc).

Too Bad I wish I would have known there was someone building. I had a completed drag +6arm, Aluminim struts, Prowedge for an ex I would have sold cheap. Instead put on by buddies R and he traded it! Good luck with the build. Takes a ton of cash and time to get an ex competitive in drag> one thing I can say is do it right the 1st time you will spend WAY less than if you settle for something and have to replace. If you end up going BB get oversize studs (GT Thunder), REPLACE Cam Chain tensioner regularly and if you can run on Alcohol (temps will be drastically reduced causing less stress on your cylinder) Also you wont be poppin head gaskets. Trust me I went through 3 cylinders and 2 sets of oversized valves before I figured it out. Remember you can always add a bottle if you are not getting the HP you want!

Wait till i post another thread with videos on my drag results yesterday. You guys might be alittle surpised even though my 300ft drag is only 275ft.

I'll post either later today or tomorrow.

Is fulton co. 275ft? I wasnt sure it seemed alot shorter than warren co. 300ft.

It's a 300ft track but the finishing laser is at the 275ft mark.

Oh ok wasnt sure. That was the first time I have raced at fulton county and I really liked the track. The dirt is just perfect. Warren county the dirt is mostly clay and really sticky, with my lowering kit my bike will still stand up every now and then.
