2001 Ford Lightning, roughly 400hp/500tq, 60K miles...been awhile since I posted, but I'm still riding. Fighting with getting this LTR to run as of lately.

WTF is up with the pictures these days?

Any fellow Lightning owners, a great site to check out is lightningrodder.com don't waste your time with svtperformance.com

We have tons of super knowledgable members, great site supporters that offer group buys and build some of the fastest trucks on the planet.

As much as I hate to say it, it makes the site look bad if you compare the activity, members, and support from the industry and this is a site that is all about a 8-15 year old trucks.

My pos, its dirty right now. Got 235k on it but I rebuilt most of it. Could use a timing belt tho. The tires are 32" dueler revos (old style) and wheels are mickey thompson classics. Truck clears 33's if I remove the mud flaps. It has no lift. Sorry for the crappy pic, I just took it and didnt feel like moving the truck to take a better one.

Amazing. Id be happy as a pig in poo if I were you (hey that rhymes lol).

One time someone broke into my shop and took all the keys outside till they found whatever they liked and threw the rest of the keys on the ground. Really made no sense since they were labeled lol.

They stole a newer F150 and decided to drive it around. Turns out the idiot who stole it was some local kid. He dropped a friend off at a supermarket for work and the owner of the truck spotted the truck and blocked it in the parking space and called the cops. Hows that for irony?

I can relate on both those stories. Our shop truck was stolen and found 2 miles from my house. (At the time I lived about 12 miles from our shop) They joy drove it for 60 miles until they manage to blow a tire out. They drove it a couple of miles on the rim and the flapping tire beat up the fender a bit. Other than that, no real damage.

The other story... We leave the keys in all of our junk at our barn. Most of the vehicles down there need a battery to be driven. So the would be thieves took all the keys out of dumptrucks and tractors and threw them or kept them or something, So we had to go buy a bunch of ignitions.

Oh yeah, here's one of my trucks. 02 2500HD with 8.1 BB and Allison 5spd. Old pic, replaced headlights and tires since photo was taken.

Have another stolen truck story:

We were working on an old mason dump PSD OBS F350. While the last mech on duty is using the john some jerk goes into the backyard where this thing was, starts it up and drives it off.

Now, funny part is it kept blowing the ign fuse over and over and it just so happened to work for this idiot. We called the police and they put out an APB on it

2 days later they catch the idiot trying to use the truck for landscaping..

People are VERY stupid.

I've seen as low as 7 and as high as 12.5. It's horrible. I average about 9, but I like the truck besides that. For the most part, a diesel will do everything better than this truck will do, but I didn't want to spend double the money for the same truck.

I paid 4 grand for my 12 valve cummins.. 5 speed. I can tow anything, i can smoke, or i can grandma drive and get 23ish mpg

russells, how high is your lift and what size are your tires? It looks pretty dang low compared to my toyota with zero lift.

I know chevys are low but I thought it would be higher lifted (cause I recall you said it was 4"???).

I like the ZR2 S10 damn shame they didnt make it higher period tho.

well ive decided just to put on another set of 33s but i need your help
im gonna crank my front torsions up cause i got alot of travle to still bring it up now im look for a way to bring the rear up also
iv seen the axle shims
shackles
and add a leafs which do you guys think is the best way to go

fastredrider44
09-27-2012, 02:56 PM
Cranking the torsion bars or installing torsion keys will eventually be the death of your front axle shafts if you do any sort of off-roading. If you were going to crank the torsion bars up some, make sure to get your truck re-aligned afterwards. I would do add-a-leaf in the rear out of the options you mentioned.

CJM, A lot of chevy's do sit low, but they're still a chevy:devil: I had 32x11.50 mudders on 10 inch wheels with no lift and no rub on my 97 Z71. My buddy had an near identical truck, but it did sit lower than mine. I got over not having a "tall" truck. I'm not trying to make up for anything. haha. By the way, russellsroost, sharp truck. I'm a sucker for black chevy's.

ok thanks
im not goin to high in the torsions only like 1.5 to 2 inches

09-27-2012, 08:25 PM
^^that will be ok. just do it, then have it aligned, chances are the alignment guy will bring it down to get camber correct. they run out of adjustment quick when you turn up the bars. make sure to take the weight off the front suspension when tightening the bolts.

CJM
09-27-2012, 08:27 PM
Dont crank them very much, your cvs will thank you later. Add a leaf in the rear, should give you approx 1-2 inches easy.

Im just messing with ya bout your truck being low. A chevy truck the frames sit very low actually, they kinda form a slightly u shape unlike other trucks that are more flat.

09-27-2012, 10:45 PM
I installed a Pro Comp add-a-leaf in my Ranger and it lifted the rear 2". I'd also recommend the add-a-leaf over anything else. They are simple to install and help you carry alittle more payload in your bed.

trick450r
09-28-2012, 04:44 PM
i had an add-a-leaf in back on my tacoma and it was HOLY stiff. throw 500 lbs in the back and it rode great but it sagged back to where it was in the first place lol.

theirs really nothing wrong with a 1 inch block under stock rear springs...especially if the truck came with no blocks at all from the factory.

CJM
09-28-2012, 06:17 PM
^ It also depends on the add a leaf, some of them are WAY to thick and are meant to replace the overload.

I run a custom leaf pack built for me by a spring shop. It has 5 leafs instead of the usual 4. I have an add'l 700lbs capacity and it sits roughly only 1 in higher than stock.

Stickman400

Yea, mine does ride extremely rough when I have no load in the bed. But when I load my 400 or 450 in the back it rides like a Cadillac. I figured that was normal since I just bought it as a drop-in kit.

Its pretty much is. The add a leaf you and many others probably have is a lift leaf as I call them. Provides lift at the cost of ride.

Notice if you compare it to the other leafs its thick as hell. My add a leaf is only marginally thicker than the rest of them. The add a leafs are worth it as most trucks could use the extra lift and increase in capacity. The auto maker always uses a compromise of ride quality and payload capacity unless its something like a 3/4-1 ton truck which is mean for work anyways. You think yours is stiff, ride around in a stock F250/350. That suckers made to be loaded down, unloaded its harsh-loaded rides like a caddy. And by loaded i mean like 500+lbs lol before the suspension moves.

My toyota t100 is basically inbetween whats deemed a heavy half ton and half ton truck. What that means is it has slightly higher capacity of that eras 1/2 ton trucks (which are a joke by todays standards). Still Ive towed and hauled some amazing loads. IE u haul car trailer with an MR2 racecar on it for 500 miles, full on landscape trailer with steel gurters, small 5/8 trailer full of scrap metal and bed full of heavy scrap (300lbs buick engine among it lol), etc. What enables me to tow all these loads is trailer brakes on some trailers and the huge 4 piston calipers and large drums my truck has, along with the custom leaf pack. The truck didnt much like the scrap pile load tho but we only went 15 miles to the scrap yard.

Sorry to ramble, just find this sorta stuff interesting.

Look at the way the pass side is all basically barely hanging on bu the drivers side is still somewhat intact.

I walked away i broke 2 knuckles, some minor cuts, and was on crutches for about 5 days because my knee was swelled up. I fell asleep late at night on my way home and hit a tree. I was so tried i was closing my eyes as i was driving and i thought i could make it home. They say most accidents happen close to home this happened around a mile from my house.
