I am looking to buy a first quad for my family. I am looking at either the 300ex or 250ex. It will be mostly just for camping and having fun in the desert. Not really looking for a screamer for the dunes. Just somthing we can all have fun with. I have a XR 70 for my sons to ride this will be mostly for my wife and I as after a year or so I will be looking to get a XR 400 or a 400ex for me. I am not really looking to mod the quad out and was interested in the 250ex due to the low maintanience required. But wondered if it has enough power to have fun with. I appreciate any input you can give. I have been a little confused as the dealers have said everything from "the 250 is fine" to "you have to get 400ex" as everything else is boring.

It sounds to me like the 250ex would be perfect for you and your family. I have been racing for 5 years now, and have lots of fast quads and bikes, and whenever i ride a 25ex, i have all kinds of fun. They are super reliable, and you can't beat the auto clutch for people who don't ride much. IMO, i don't think you would be dissapointed with the 250ex, as long as you don't plan on racing.

i think if you were to go with a quad for the "outback" get a utility cause they have racks you can load down w/stuff and there easy to ride and will run forever by just running good gas in em and changin the oil. This is all my opinion though ut if i were in your shoes i would go utility like a rancher or a foreman those are good beginner utes that you can gorw into............hope this helped!i am looking for a beat up ute right now so it can pull me out of the woods when i break down and use it for hunting/campin................:)

There was an article not too long ago in one of the mags about a gentleman that rents 250EX's at the dunes.

Sounds like the 250EX might just suit you. Good luck and let us know what you decide!!

the 250 isn't real fast. but if your sons ride the XR 70. i wouldn't feel safe putting them on anything bigger than a 250. my neighbor used to have a XR 70 and he's 8. his mom has a 250EX. he rides that around. its way too big for him. he's probably only 3 and a half feet tall. he's pretty short. he doesn't do too bad on it actually. just like 1 or 2 gear. how old is your son? i'd say 8-13 250. 14 and up 300. the 250 is easy to shift, good brakes, Honda, and you can have fun on it.

Man I can't believe how helpfull you guys have been. I really appreciate so much input so fast. I think I am leaning to the 250ex right now. I thought hard about a forman but we want more of a sport type quad instead of the utility style. Any more insight is appreciated........Thanks again!!.......KJ

I say get the 300ex its a little more expensive but is well worth it I think. It has more power and your wife will probably enjoy it more than a 250ex. Plus its also easy maintenence. Good luck deciding:devil

I would go with the 250ex if the people riding it dont really ride much. the 250 is low maintnance. they arent the fatsest but u can have a lot of fun on them!:devil

Having just purchased an 03 250EX for my 14 yr old daughter and an 02 300EX for myself I can tell you that the 250 is surprisingly fun to ride. It will probably be plenty fast enough for the whole family (until you get something bigger) and the auto clutch makes it easy for inexperienced riders. Using reverse on the 250 is a piece of cake and not so easy on the 300. I'm happy with my purchase but if I had to do it over, I would buy the 250 again and a 400EX for myself.

YellowDog1....My thoughts exactly. I was thinking 250ex first and either the 400ex or 400XR for me later. Thanks again guys!
