Cam Timming

Looking for some tips. Seems that Im off one tooth either way and cant get it just right. I haven't pulled side cover yet to mess with bottom gear...Maybe I need to?

Quad is a '87 250x

Pull the site plug's out of the stator cover. Put the timing mark on the T mark for TDC on the flywheel (piston up).Topend, Cam lobe's down and put the cam chain on.For where when the cam gear timing mark's are side to side even with the head. It's In time. Easer way, Is to just put the piston up and cam lobe's down then put the chain on. That work's for me!
