Also a good idea to tighten the hubs down every few rides, they loosen up no matter what it seems.

I started using hitch pin clips that you use in a tractor hitch pin similar to this: http://carexteriorworld.com/images/51jmarnk0ml.jpg Works great and when you have to tighten the hub nut or take the hub off you don't have to rip your hair out from spending 15 minutes getting the cotter pin out after it broke off in the axle. I also wrap an zip-tie around the end of it to make sure it doesn't come out.

I always wondered how those would work, the other thing I thought might work is those finger pinching hitch pin things, if you know what I'm talking about. If they didn't snap loose they look like they'd work great, but idk how small they make them. They sure would be handy to carry around is something like that happened on the trail!

I had the same thing happen when I was a kid, my brother was at work and I took off down the paved road on his 250R. Top gear wide open the rear wheel fell off....i just remember looking at the ditch then waking up in the chair in the living room, not good. I was pretty lucky to only get a concussion. In hind sight I probably shouldn't have been on that quad at the age of 12.

Blessing in disguise with that table top coming up for sure!

Cotter pins just dont fall out..lol. Id bet you never put them in...i bet you will now though! I have stripped castle nuts with impact guns, they dont need to be that tight anyway. Same with wheel lugs, ive spun the studs right out of the hubs. Thise spring loaded hitch oins everyone is talkjng about work great, they are usually hardened too, reuseable.

http://www.pjtool.com/ProductImages/hitchaccess/5060.jpg I thought about using those but that ring wouldn't be big enough to go around the castle nut to hold it securely if you got one with a small enough pin.

Watched the video. They could have put the tire and hub back on and put something to hold it on. It would have gotten him back.

Same!

Had a similar experience on my 400. Was about 30 miles out on trails with 4 friends. We were all beat and turned around, decided to head back home (most likely the bar first). Soon as i spun it around on the trail my right tires hits a ditch and pulled the ball joint completely out. Tire was literally at a 45 degre angle lol.

ALWAYS CARRY ROPE! I started keeping in a backpack since i watch the movie the Boondock Saints. Anyways, tied the top and bottom arms tight to the spindle and i made it the whole way without it popping back out.

What does this post have to do with the topic? I guess absolutely nothing. Other than you can fix most mechanical problems on the trail with rope! (or duct tape and vicegrips)

When I use that style of pin, I twist wire around the end to make sure it doesn't come back out.
