Well, going to replace the clutch on my 450. Its an 05, was raced and still has oem origjnal clutch...so no shame for it.
Question i had is why does it run fine cold to warm? When jt gets hot it wants to roll with the clutch in and impossjble to find neutral while running. Yes i adjusted the cable at the perch and motor, cant get it any better.

Be it 400ex or 450r, all of them have this issue. Some worse than others. You can try putting in a new clutch if you want, but alot of the times it wont help much.

In order to find neutral on my EX I either shut it down or roll with the clutch and no throttle in and it clicks in. That doesnt work I clutch in and slightly throttle and it drops in.

I think the tolerances on these are just super tight.

Finding neutral isnt a big deal. Always been easy on the 400, and its easy on the 450 cold. Heats up and i gotta shut it off if i need neutral. I guess it just expands enough hot to cause it, plus im sure plates are worn anyway.

I also have a '96 300ex and it's the opposite of my other two. It always gives me fits finding neutral and its always been like that even right off the showroom.

My 450s the same way. Easy to find it when cold, PITA when hot. My 400 is easy as pie as long as I have my clutch adjusteed right. I think CJMs right, the 450 just has tighter tolerances.

Well the neutral thing i dont really care about. The 450 wants to jump and roll when i pull the clutch and drop it in first. Stalls sometimes. Only does this when its hot. Does it if i pull up into second too. Can put around on it for a half hour and wont do it. Run it hard for 5 minutes and it does this.

Prolly the clutch plates then. Sounds like it's slipping after it gets hot which is a sign of your plates wearing out. When they get really worn out they will slip like that when it's cold.

Yep, new clutch time.

Could also be the adjustment at the bars or case, but usually just time to replace the clutch anyways.

Thats the answer i was looking for thanks. Hinson plates work in the oem honda? They are not much more than an oem clutch pack.

I was super skepitcal about running the Tusk brand clutch in my 450 (13:1, mild port work, ex&intake mods, so still pretty mild) and it still works perfect after half a dozen races and countless practice hours..

Save some coin, IMO

What do they run? Honda, hinson and wiseco packs are all around 80$.

Out of stock, but that's the only place I checked for them.

Make sure you check your adjustments on the bars and on the case. It could be as easy as that if you haven't already messed around with it. If it's still not fully engaging, then it's something in the clutch.

One thing that people rarely mention is to inspect the clutch basket. The clutch basket fingers get grooves worn into them, and when that happens the clutch won't operate well. So check for grooves.

Stick with the Honda OEM clutch. Most pro and A class riders that have to pay for them say OEM clutch is the best.
