View Full Version : 300EX gearing

I have a 300EX as a house guest (or playmate for my 400EX) for a while and its owner wants to fix it up. Its biggest problem right now is the gearing so I thought I'd ask some of you 300EX owners to help me out. It has 22" rears on it which won't change and we ride all woods, mud, hills, ect... with some fast fire roads thrown in here and there. What have you guys/girls found to be the best front/rear sprockets (tooth count) for this type of riding with 22" tires? Thanks

Id stick with stock gearing, 13/38, or go for more of a top end setup, with like a 14/38, or maybe a 13/36

Can you explain the "gearing issue" you are finding/having?
The 22's should not be an issue, since the stock tires are 22".

Otherwise, I agree with KC300EX to run 13/38, which is the stock front and rear spocket sizes.

If it were me I would stick with the stock gearing since it sounds like you're more into top ending it. The 300 doesn't have enough power to pull a bigger front/smaller back in 5th gear. Of course, I am pretty heavy, with a 150lb person on board it might pull a few less on the rear.

The problem is that he bought the 300 used and the previous owner bought new chain and sprockets at 14/38. Everything else is stock and it doesn't pull strong in fourth or fith gear. I didn't know what the stock gearing was and assumed the guy had gone back with stock stuff. Thanks for the help.
