i have a 2001 400ex that i would like to start racing soon. it has stock tires and rims, yoshimura full rs-3, k&n air filter no air box lid, pro design kill switch, rev limiter, nerf bars, dg front bumper, i put a new carb in it about a month or 2 ago, carb is jetted, full skid plates (belly, swingarm, and a-arms) this is all off the top of my head there may be more.

sell it and buy a real 400(z400, or a kfx 400) then you might be able to keep up.

Till the swingarm snaps or the frame cracks on one of them.

Better than rebuildin a blown engine because it over heated.

Never ever ever had that problem with a 400ex unless someone jetted it wrong-therefore user fault.

Sorry but I aint impressed with the Z/kfz/dvx at all.

That being said, Im glad you like yours. Now back to the thread.

I had my 400ex at 12. At 12 I was also about 5'8 so bigger than most 12 year olds. I'm 14 almost 15 now and 6'1" and growing and 165-170lbs and now I'm starting to outgrow my 400 and am wanting a 450. Are you racing mx or xc? You need to talk to your old man before anything

If you won the race as easy as you come off, Post up a vid of your "badass" z beating him on his 400ex.

That and i have been riding hard all week and its been 100+ here all week and my motor is as good today as it was a few months ago.
Honda KNOWS how to build a quad to be reliable, The Z and KFX not so much. Thats why you can buy them all day long for $1200 built.

But lets see this badass z on video you brag up so much.

Easy way to see what you need is to go to the next race that you want to be in, and look at the bikes that come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and get what they have. Start saving, its going to be expensive.

Do not get depressed if your bike looks like the one that came in last place. Also, forget all motor work for now, racing wont be lining up next to some yokel from down the street and running through 3rd gear in a straight line. Suspension is where its at, and your conditioning. Start running 10 miles every other day, more cardio on the off days, dont eat red meat, and did I mention start saving lots of $$$$$????

Suspensions where its at, all the power in the world wont help if your quad dont handle.

GT Thunder MX link and worked shock and +2 arms and redone honda 450r shocks should work. It aint cheap, about 1200 bucks if you can source the parts for the best price or used.
Link- $180
Reworked back shock $100-350 (depends on if you just valve it or full on dual rate or whatever
A-arms $400-600+
Reworked from shocks $350+

You could do +2 arms, stock 450r shocks for now, and rework the back shock for now and it should handle pretty good.

Id say go with 450r shocks if your lookin to keep the cost low then buy a pair of standard travel A-arms.

No pun was intended. I just want to see a good 400 vs 400 race. The ones on joke tube have one guy trying and the other is looking at birds or they both piss around etc. Just wanted to see you guys line um up if it was possible.

What kind of racing are you even doing?

XC: run what you bring, you'll figure out what you need.

MX: SUSPENSION, your going to wreck yourself without it. Save your money and get some good extended a-arms and good front and rear shocks....or better yet save up for a used, built 450. You simply cant compete with the 450's on a 400.
