I was just wondering if anybody on here knew anything about lifted wranglers. My buddy's looking at a TJ with 35's and a dana 44 rear axel but the guy us running 3:73 gears which I feel like are too high to run with 35's, but I'm not really into this stuff so I wouldn't know, I was wondering what everyone on here thought about that. Thanks.

Well, 3.73s would be good for gas mileage, but if you plan on taking it offroad you would have no power (atleast not what you could have). You want atleast 4.10s in there if your going offroad. 4.56s would be about what you want if you want good power and decent gas mileage. 4.10s if you want good gas mileage and decent power.

Ditto, except I'd aim for the upper end of that spectrum (higher numbers, lower gearing)

The equivalent gearing from stock to 35s would depend in what stock size was, there were a couple different options, but the end result is somewhere between 4.3 and 4.6

If the stock tire size was 30/9.5-15 then 4.27 would be the closest. If the stock size was 225/75-15 then 4.56 gearing would get you closer.

Larger tires are harder to turn, so I'd advise against the 4.11 unless the lift kit also came with motor work.

This is based on the D44 rear gearing, they have lots of gear options. I know 4.27 and 4.56 gears are available, I didn't bother to check if matching gear sets are available for the front.

Its going to be a turd, i had a tj with a 4.0/ax-15 and 35s with 3:73 ,it didnt have enough to pull 5th gear on the I state. Ive also had a 6 cylinder 5 speed with 35s and 4:56, it rode out about perfect, topped out about 70-75 mph.

I hate trucks that are geared too tall. It's not too terribly bad if it's manual, because you generally have more gear options so it really only affects 1st gear.

But man, I've driven some 3-speed autos that were geared wrong, it's awful. 3rd gear was a turd, but 2nd gear was too tall, there aren't enough gear options to find a happy medium. Garbage. Obviously the perfect gearing is the goal, but I would take too short over too tall any day.

On a jeep with 35" tires the correct gear you should have is 4.88's with an ax-15. There is no good gas MPG with a wrangler stock or lifted. To re gear a pair of axles its $1200 at least at a 4 wheel store.

If it has the D44 and the jeep is solid with no rust and a good price its worth it. The D35 and 35's is what causes problems. I run 4.10 gears and 35" kevlars but have a 3 speed auto. Its still not enough, It needs 4.56's.

The lowest you can go to get by with out down shifting all the time is 4.56's. Also find out if the guy put the correct speedo gear in the Tcase. Too many factors come into play than what a magazine/catalog says. Real life numbers, Elevation, etc is what counts along with what you plan to wheel, Rocks, Trails, Mud etc.
