A little background info here, I rode dirtbikes almost my whole life up until 2 years ago this month. I was riding a trail here around my house and I wrecked and broke my leg right below my knee and it also tore my ACL. After being off work for almost 2 months, I decided I couldn't afford for that to happen again so I sold off everything I had motorcycle related and bought a Jeep.

I have had a lot of fun with the Jeep, but I have had an itch I just haven't been able to scratch here lately. Yesterday I found a 2003 400ex on craigslist for $800 that needed a timing chain. Well I got the guy talked down to $600 before even seeing it and went and picked it up. It looks just like you can imagine a $600 bike would look. It needs some work but my goal is to have it ready to ride by fall and ride all winter and spring to prepare for the Snowshoe GNCC next summer.

Did they weld or bolt the square stock to the back of the pegs? It sure is a $600 beater but those types of machines make for the best builds!!!

Poor old girl, she deff. is in need of some lovin'. There is a couple parts on it that aren't even made for it. Chopped and hacked up to fit on it. Give it some love and be sure to post plenty of pics.

Haha I never saw your thread until now On The Rocks.

The ol girl sure does need some work, but there is a lot of potential under the ugly stuff lol.

I will for sure get plenty of pictures along the way. My job doesn't allow a ton of free time but I will be spending all I can on getting this thing going.

I know it is a little early in the game for things like skid plates, but I scored a frame skid and swing arm skid on ebay yesterday for $70 shipped. Pretty happy about that one.

On another note, since I have to break in to the motor anyway, what do you all recommend as far as over bore sizes? Are 440s as unreliable as the stories I have heard?

Would I maybe better off with a 426 or even 416? Especially since all I am doing is woods riding and racing?

Do a 416 that way you still have another bore left on the cylinder. You have to resleeve for a 440 and a 416 or 426 is snappier in the woods a 440 is broad power all the through. 416 P&P Hotcam itll run like a raped ape but do a CRF 450 timing chain

Man, really been off the ball on this one. My job pretty much rules my life.

But, I do have a timing chain and a gasket kit coming. I think I am going to hold off on a bore for a little while. I really just want to get it running and rideable right now.
