Doesn't look like a bad start for the price. Save double your money and you can get much more upfront which will save you in the long run IMO.

Check the frame everywhere for cracks or nasty repairs. Pay close attention to all the engine mount locations and peg mounts. Check the engine cases for cracks and repairs/leaks. Look all around the sprocket area and the bottom case halves, and the drain plug. Check the swing arm for cracks also. Let the owner speak regarding how he has maintained it and play dumb. What kind of oil and gas mix, what kind of oil in the transmission has he used? How many power bands does it have? Hope the engine is cold when you get there so you can see how he treats it when it comes to warming it up. If he takes off on it within seconds of starting it cold then that is not a good sign. These engines have what is described as a piston slap noise when they idle. Search youtube for examples of that. It is nothing to worry about. Hope this much helps and welcome.

just another quick question.. He says it has 2 hours on the motor but needs clutch plates, but he also has the clutch kit. I think i can replace them easily but does that indicate anything else? I just have to ask a lot of questions

Hours on the motor are less important than how and who did it last. He probably means 2hrs on the piston and rings. Worry more about how it runs and rides, and the overall value. Anything in that price range will eventually need work and you will be much better off working on that than a z400.

I agree, and it's amazing what a nice set of plastics do for a sale, even if this quad was a total pile mechanically (which I doubt), the clean look would almost sell it on it's own.
