My headlights worked good now theyre having problems. Sometimes when I flip the switch only one will come on at a time or they both will but they'll flicker really fast whether the quad is on or off. Any idea why?

This is for DDM tuning HIDs

Take the headlight switch apart and clean the inside of the switch with electric contact cleaner. If that doesn't work it may be that your ballasts are starting to go out, or your battery is going dead. My truck did the same thing when my battery started going low from leaving them on with the truck off for too long.

I've tried 2 different switches, a radioshack toggle switch and a yfz switch clutser which i use now. I'll gett out the DMM and check voltages

Voltages,

Quad off, lights off- 12.5
quad on, lights off ~30secs after running-13.8-14.2 volts
Quad off, lights on- 12.1v
quad on lights on- 12.3-12.4v

They will both flicker then after about 30 secsonds the right light turns off and the left stays on working fine. ??

Ideas?

I hooked up a 12v 2 amp charger and with that on and the quad running the lights will work fine.

I would check your voltage regulator and your stator out.

Go back five pages and check out my post titled no spark and it will tell you how to check the stator.

Yea I'm thinking something elsewhere is a miss. The HIDs don't draw nearly the same amps as the stock headlights do after start up. So I'd say something is going bad somewhere else. Stator or Rectifier maybe? I'm no electrical expert.

I can't do it right now because i'm leaving for 5 days of riding. If I need to can I just unplug 1 ballast and only run 1 light? It works fine then .

After keeping the battery on charge for a few hours, the lights work when the quads running if the rpms are up even 100-200 from idle.

If you think you aren't going to need it then do it now and tape the ballast and the plug off with some electrical tape because you don't want that stuff to rust or corrode. But yes that will work in a pinch.

It really sounds like your stator is starting to fail on you. Its pretty easy to replace. I just got one off of ebay off of an 04 for fifty bucks shipped, works great. I would stick to the OEM, because I have heard nothing but bad things about brands like Ricky Stator and others. I would try the regulator first if you got a buddy with a 400 because it is just 2 bolts and 1 plug. Easy quick swap to try. If its not that, the stator is most likely the issue.

how does it feel to have overpaid for the ddm tuning hid kit. sounds to me like the ballast are starting to fail seeing how you said its with the quad on or off.

i bought the 36.99 buy now, free shipping hid kit on ebay and spliced wires into a factory plug and even spliced the wires to go thru the factory rubbber boots and they been working great on an 05 400ex and now my 05 450r.

Bet they come with a lifetime warranty on ballasts and bulbs huh? Oh ya, not the HIDs by the way. Charged the battery and once it gets up to operating voltage they are good.

I Also used the stock rubber boots too.

my hid's have lasted longer than yous already and i got no issues.
everyone will blame the bike or everything else besides the hid kit, have you swapped out other bulbs or ballast to prove its not anything to do with the kit?

I doubt it's a bad ballast or bulb, I haven't had a problem with my DDM HIDs on my truck since I installed them 5 years ago. And even if it is they will send you 2 new one's for free if you can prove they are bad. I'm gunna agree with jman and say it's your stator.
