View Full Version : Ring gap too much?

I'm rebuilding a 400ex motor and got to the new rings/piston. Piston kit install sheet calls for .019 gap on rings. I had .015 on the top and .009 on the bottom ring. I filed bottom ring to exactly .019 without issue but went a little too much on the top ring ( ended up with .021 gap).

Is this OK to go ahead and assemble? It's not even mine, I'm just rebuilding it for some kid but I want it right. Please let me know if you have experience in this area. I really want to rap this job up today but all the stores are closed.

Cant say for sure, but if it were me I would probably get another set of rings or chance it. Chances are it will probably be fine.

Thanks, that makes me feel a little better. I already have it all back together now... I got tired of sitting around. In for the night since it's so hot outside, I'll set the valve clearance and put the engine back in tomorrow. Just waiting on a new swingarm pivot bolt from Ebay to finish this job up and GET MY GARAGE BACK!
