Hi everybody, I just recently got my hands on a nice used 450R and noticed that with 18s it had absolutely no top end, mostly because it is setup for mx and has 13/37 gearing. Then with 20s it gained some top speed but still feels like I'm needing a 6th gear. I'm wanting to gain some more top speed with 20s on it but keep the acceleration with 18s on. I have to sets of tires that I can swap out whenever. Is this possible and what would be the best gearing? I'm hoping to get about 65 or 70 with the 20s but still have the arm ripping acceleration with the 18s. I mostly ride fast trails and gravel roads but occasionally visit an MX track. Thanks for your help guys!

with a stock engine its one or the other speed, or torqe, you can drop the rear to a 36 but you wont see much or you can raise the front to 14 and see a good amount of speed but you will loose bottom end . sounds like its time to pick up a cam.

The change in tire size wont make a noticable difference?

You shouldn't need that much top end anyway!

I havent topped mine out in 5th for some time, haha

I'm running 13/38 on my 05 with 18's and I love the acceleration

I would bump the front back up to a 14, then run a 39 in the rear (one larger in the back will keep some of your acceleration), that will bring your top end back. I ran a 13/38 for a while and it was way too short. Even with that taller gearing the 18's will make it easier to accelerate compared to running 20's.

yes but like i said you will loose some bottom end, you will just have to try diffrent changes and see what works best for you

Alright, well I looked up another thread on here, this one to be exact: http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=286549&highlight=sprocket+sizes And saw a few people running 14/38 with 20s and another running 14/38 with 18s for MX so I'm gunna go with that.

the 14/38 is stock gearing for the 04/05's i think it's a great setup personally! i run 19"s

When I used to ride I was always a fan of the 14/38 gearing. It didn't feel like it lost all that much top end speed with the 18's, but it had the acceleration to pull me in 3rd gear from a near stop. With a stock motor though, you pretty much have to choose from acceleration or top speed, unless you add rpms but then it won't be a stock motor.
