250x rebuild

I'm rebuilding my 91, 250x after letting it sit for 5 years, the cam and rockers are shot, their being replaced with hardned rockers and a white brothers cam, both exhaust valves are bent and being replaced and its getting a ring job. What I want to know is why the rockers and cam would wear so bad? I'm thinking oil pump? any ideas?

Could be the oil pump. But also it could be from not staying on top of regular maintainence such as changing the oil and filter on a regular basis and keeping the air filter clean.

Yeah wish it hadn't sat for so long too:) but thats life. As far as oil changes and keeping the air filter clean was always real good about taking care of it, is there any way to test the oil pump while its torn down, so if it needs replacing I can do it while the engine is out of the bike.
