View Full Version : Looks like it's time for a timing chain

I adjusted my valves twice but I still hear ticking. Actually, the last couple of times I started it the sound at first was a louder rattling from up top and it ran a little rough for the first minute. Haven't taken it apart yet but I'm pretty sure it's time for a timing chain. From what I've read a crf450r chain will work. Is that right?

This will be the first time I've had to tackle this job. What other related parts/gaskets will I need? Will the motor have to come out? If not, is it better if it does?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Need the clutch side cover gasket, 02 CRF450r timing chain and possibly timing chain guides and tensioner.

Your gonna have to remove the clutch so either you need an impact and a clutch holding tool, rags or whatever t hold the basket to get it all off.

Its not hard just time consuming. The engine can stay in the frame as well.

Make sure that your right exhaust valve is adjusted right. The decompressor can hold it open and then if you adjust it like that there will be alot of lash. It happened to me but i'm not sure if this has happened to anyone else.
