View Full Version : Thinking of buying a 400ex to part out

Hey guys,

I ran across a 2007 400ex that the guy tore down to go to a bigger bore. He says he messed up the piston taking it out and just stopped. He says he has all the parts but there is some rust to the cylinder from being out. Also, it alledgedly has a new stage 3 hot cam in it. I can pick it up for $500, could I make money by parting it out at that price? Anything that I should look for that would make it more or less inticing?

Thanks
Stephen

i would say you could make a lot of money if you are going to part it out. check out ebay and see what some of the components are going for and make your decision based on that. If you are getting a whole quad- body, frame and motor- for $500, i would say go for it. just keep in mind it may take some time to recoup your investment and start making a profit... but in my experience, you will usually make more money parting something out then you would selling the whole package.

Think about what you can sell the parts for, look up ebay for pricing.

The bad part about it is, I just shipped two 400ex front rims and tires and it was $45 for shipping.

So if you want parts to sell, you have to have a lowish price, bad part is once people see the shipping charge they might not want to buy it.

When buying something to re-sell like a 400ex, you have to take into account how much you spend and what parts are actually worth selling, then you can determine how much profit you can make.

After shipping everything if you only make $200-$400 on the whole partout after shipping, you have to ask yourself if it was worth it with all the drive time, wrench time, buying boxes and tape, dealing with unhappy ebay buyers...etc.

If I were to buy it for $500, I would restore the frame and driving components, sell the motor and wait for a good deal on a dirt bike and build another hybrid.

FYI, if you sell the frame, it will cost around $100 just to ship it.

Yeah, shipping is a pain. I do have small business on the side so I have an account that makes it a little cheaper to ship via UPS. That is definitely a consideration though. It just seems like a really good deal. I was considering buying it as a parts bike for myself as well. If I had the skill to get the motor running and it would only take a piston, it would be a no brainer. The other option would be to fix it for myself or to sell. The problem with that is these things have no demand around here. Everybody wants hunting bikes. Which is why I've been able to get it so cheap.

And the highest offer i have ever had on a frame was around $120

If you deal locally then parting them out isnt bad, but you end up with, a airbox, a gas tank, a frame, a header, a swingarm, and a few other odds and ends that you just cant seem to get rid of.

Its a PITA to get rid of some parts, but with the high demand of quads around my area, all my stuff sold pretty quick.

Like i sold my front end, axle and plastic the first day i had it up.

I took a beating on some parts because i didnt know what they were worth and now i realise even though i made $1100 i could have made like $1500-1700 but heck i sold my RUNNING motor for $250 (idiot) when i sould have not takin any less than at least $500 for it.

If you get it... how much would you take for the headlight, hood, and headlight mounts/ assembly ? :D :D :D

Been there done that. I havent bought an entire quad but parts I took of mine I no longer want or bought thinking I would use them just wont go away. No one wants the parts really. Mostly b/c its a dated quad and many more people have 450's these days.

Dang that's an 07? My 2000 is in better condition then that!

For that price you might as well pick it up. There's bound to be something you might find useful and the parts you don't want you can sell off. Best of both worlds as long as you can break even.

Great price, but I would run the VIN number before you buy it just to keep yourself out of trouble just in case it is stolen. Even though it needs some tlc, that price seems way to good for an 07.

Guy says he has the title but he hasn't responded to my last couple texts so he's either sold it or changed his mind. Guess that makes the decision easy.

There is a national stolen atv data base that whenever an atv is stolen the vin number gets put in it by the police. There are also several other stolen atv sites that the owner of the stolen atv can enter the vin number in and anyone can run a vin number in to check to see if what they are about to buy is stolen or ok to buy.
