Hey fellas, I'm the dad who built the 90cc modified using the DS450 as the chassis.
We raced at Ballance this past weekend. While there I noticed that the left frame (hip) was cracked by the nerfbars. I know it was not cracked before I built the mod. SO, my 100 pound kid was able to break the frame........that sure is not reassuring.
Thank You to Rich Hetrick for hooking me (and Logan) up with team CanAm and brokering a deal for some new reinforced hips. It still made for an expensive weekend - not to mention the long day replacing the hips.

What year is the frame?

Frame is an '08.. She's officially been upgraded to an '12 now though. Regardless, I can't imagine a 100 pound kid could break them.

Im not trying to be a jerk but If your bike was the one posted on six5design site I commented that you should have used an aftermarket 250r frame...It would have handled amazing and wouldnt have broke. Anyway I think your hybrid is one of the cleanest nicest conversions I have seen.

That one was not mine. They one was done after mine and for a whole lot more money. I chose the CanAm because it was the lightest chassis AND when my son makes the step to a 450 he'll be very comfortable on that chassis. And since CanAm is the ONLY company supporting the sport - I'll use them all day long.
Part of my thinking also is, he'll eventually get taller and he'll fit this machine better in the future. This year is a learning year - next year I believe he'll be able to compete.

It probably has more to do with your child is sitting on the seat when they land jumps. Either because they are to short or tired.

When the a class guys land jumps we are always standing, so the subframe and what not does not see the jolt of weight.

Just a thought.

He only weighs 100 pounds, so any jolt could not be nearly what it would be with a 200 pound adult. And standing when landing would cause more jolt on the hips that sitting. The hips cracked down near the footpeg. CanAm has addressed the issue on these reinforced hips I have now. But I still think its ridiculous that a 100 pound kids could break them....

What hips did you get?? Stocks or something else?

I got the hips from Team CanAm, they are the same as stock except they have reinforced areas. I'd bet the 2013's will have them as stock.

Have to agree with Logan #34's Dad, 100 LB rider should not break that frame, expecially when he isn't even pushing the quad to its full potential.

Very nice looking quad though!!!

Thanks,

The frame did not break from the rider, his style, or how hard he rode, it broke from vibration, the little motors put out so much static vibration, they literally shake the frames apart. we have been building 90 mods/ super minis for about 12 years, and the only thing you can do is try to cut the vibration down. The crf 150r, builds don't break nearly as much, because the vibration is much less.

Never thought of that. I wonder if I could somehow mount it using rubber mounts. Something similar to the mounts that hold the cvt type engines in. Got any ideas?
