When looking for spindles, they are grouped in 86-87, and 88-89. What is the difference between them? And why is it so hard to find left 88-89 spindles?

the 88-89 are lighter, and use a spindle shaft design similar to the newer years of 400ex and 450r.

you need a set? what year are you looking for i have one of every model

theres the difference 88 has a spacer inside the hub between the bearings.

89 has the tapered spacer between the bearings. 88 doesn't have it, that is the only difference between the hubs.
