i have an 03 400ex stock except for the pipe, it has been spitting out white smoke when i pin it then let off the gas, its been burning oil to, looks to be the head gasket, it runs great besides this issue. could it be more than just the head gasket??

Sounds like it needs rebuilt if it's consuming oil. I can't remember what white smoke means, but consuming oil is rings. So it either needs new rings and a hone or a new piston kit and a bore and hone. You'd have to tear into it to be certain.

Actually if you have a blown headgasket, its possible that your burning oil from your headgasket being broke.

If its broke between the timing chain hole and the piston/sleeve it could cause burning oil.

Lucky for you the engines are VERY simple. The top end, there is really nothing to it.

Single cam, air cooled... nothing to it!

White Smoke = unburned Gas
Blue Smoke = Oil
I am pretty sure that is the way it goes.

I'm new to all this stuff too but I've been doing tons of research. The consensus seems to be:

White Smoke: Burning Oil which most people says points to the rings. Could be a bigger problem though.

Black Smoke: Unburned gas, running rich

Do you have any loss of power? A cracked head would greatly diminish compression and you would have a substantial drop in power.

no loss of power at all, and i ride it about once a week so its not old gas but for a 4-5 hr ride its burning about a quart and u can see the oil build up on the tip of the exhaust its moist when in riding
