Blue smoke is oil. Black smoke is to rich or unburnt gas. If its blue smoking and smells like oil buring then u are buring oil. Does it smoke only on start up or if u are hard on the gas and let off does it let out blue smoke? I ride by myself alot and the first time I found out I was burning oil was from a rider where I was at told me.

It smokes a little bit at start up, but you can barely even notice it. thats the only time it smokes.

I think that means you need new valve seals..

If it smokes when you start it up and stops its valve seals, if it smokes all the time or you losing a significant amount of oil every ride then you need new rings and or a new upsized piston/bore job.

CJM, not saying your wrong, but why would i need a bigger piston or bigger bore to fix a problem? and im not burning oil very fast, but im not burnin it slow either. you cant notice it smokin at start up unless you REALLLLLLLY look at the exhaust.

Because usually if its burning any significant amount of oil the bore is worn out.

Rings can help sometimes, but the bore must be within spec for them to do the job.

If you ride for 2-4 hours exactly how much oil is burned? 1/4 of a quart or more Id bore it out, if less then I would let it go for awhile longer.

Thing is when you crack it open and do rings you must measure the clearances. If its too much your out 30 bucks for rings and gotta bore it anyways. Thats the dilemma you face.

Is your choke on when you start it up and it does this? I know you said it's not black but if it's really hard to tell it's smoking it might be unburnt fuel from the choke being on, I know I thought something was wrong with myn because a bit of black came out when I started it in the winter until I realized that I was using the choke, and just like you I couldn't really tell unless I looked close. A good way to tell if it's black is go up to a white garage door, back right up to it and giver hell and if rich is the problem then there will be black smudge on the door. If it's oil, then start it and rev it a bit, put your nose near the exhaust, don't sit there and breathe it in though lol, and if it's minor burning it normally smells kinna like pig s*** I find. If it's burning a lot then you'd be able to tell it would smell like oil. Just what I've found in my experiance, but I would do as CJM says lol, it sounds like you could just leave it for a while and not worry, you will know when it needs a rebuild for sure most of the time.

im about 99.9% sure the choke isnt on. im ready to just rebuild it and make it faster anyways. lol. and in the summer i dont even need the choke to start it.

hey man my 400ex does the same thing it is the valve seals i am 100% sure i would put 100 dollars on it too. I have a choke delete on mine so i know its the valve seals. so just replace the valve seals and you'll be good to go!
