I've made a few things.. but not on my 400ex.

Put stacks on a go kart, along with LED lights, a windsheild (made from... some clear something at lowes...)

Redid the wood in the seat.... Not much i can improvise on a sport quad though.

well when i built that at the time i had acess to a cnc plasma table and tig welders.

took cardboard and made a rough template of what i wanted and then wrote all the measurements on it in sharpy. after that i drew them up in cad and had my buddy cut them out on the cnc plasma table. after that i cleaned the edges up and tack welded it all together making sure it was square. after that i spend about an hour and a half tig welding all the seems. their not hard to make its the matter of haveing acess to all the right tools and comming up with a design. i built that on a friday and didnt have alot of time so the welds didnt look the best in spots but o well.

Well I guess I wired up a custom starter button/headlight switch, and relocated my neutral/reverse lights. Here it was when I first did it, when I had shaved fenders(new plastics on in the pic).

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv192/Stickman400/Quad%20Pics/IMAG0143.jpg
Then after I put on my new plastic I didn't like having to reach all the way around the fender to start it or turn on my headlights, so I moved it up to my bars. Here it is, you can see it's a headlight/killswitch button for bikes, but I wired the killswitch to be the starter button and taped off the killswitch wires:

various grits of sand paper followed by a 2000 grit wet sand apply mothers aluminum mag polish or something meant for the specific material. and lots of elbo grease and polishing with a wheel on a grinder or drill.
