I am getting ready to put a piston and cam in. Looking to put either a stock bore 10:8-1 or 416 10:8-1 piston in. The cam was going to be a hot cam stage 2. With recent hot cam issues i have been looking at other options. I am wondering about the material that hot cams is using I talked to curtis sparks and they have two drop in cams. One very aggressive cam that is quite expensive ($375.00+/- ) but they say it gives good gains through out and is a great cam. and one mild cam $ 150+/- If is lasts the extra couple hundred bucks is worth it to me.
or i am looking at just installing a XR 400 cam for the reliablity factor. Is anyone running these cams with a high comp. piston ? What are your thoughts. I like to stay with supreme pump gas.

What else should do when i have it torn down. Heavy duty Cam Chain?

Well as X-Rider will tell you their so called Drop-Ins still need some heavy duty valve springs to be on the safe side. If I was you I would check out the TC Racing Cams that are complete drop-ins and much cheaper...

Curtis Sparks directly todl me that hardened rockers and vavlue springs are not needed with the drop in cams!

Yep and X-Rider said they told him the same thing, and his valve spring ending up messing up his motor. PM him about it...

JD, I noticed your sig indicates your riding style as woods. In addition, the post quotes reliablilty and the ability to run pump gas are the goals of the build. Basically, you just spelled out a TC, XC motor!

Both Sparks and TC are both great engine builders. X-Rider did did post however that heavier springs would most likely prevented some problems in hindsite. Maybe you could consider some kibblewhites as an "insurance policy".

sparks is way to much...just get a hotcam and you wont have to worry about springs or rockers

The sparks cam is pimp daddy I"m sure..i've heard lots of good things about it..but Sparks is a TT, MX engine guy I think and builds his motors for whitle knuckle topend pull. I don't think that would be the cam you want. Go with a TC GNCC grind cam,,or for less money get the XR400 cam,,,GT thunder also has a nice XC drop in cam.

A 416 piston, XR400 cam, and mild port and polish will get you the results your lookin for and reliability would not be an issue..:)

I talked to both TC and sparks again today. The aggresive cam sparks has he put it in a cross county 416 bike. I dont know. It sounds real nice. It has nice gains all the way through the power band according to sparks and X rider. If i get it i will get heavy duty springs. It supposed to also have the decomression. The cost is pricy 375.00 If you by a hard welded cam the cost of rockers, cam etc. you are basicly at the same price.

TC cross country cam is 179 something but he also wants a core charge of 150.00 If its a drop in why the core charge ?
I am still researching, although leaning towards an xr 400 cam

Thanks for the feedback

There's no core charge if you give Tom your stock cam...
