As I was removing my header today to replace the header gaskets, one of the studs broke in half. I have no money to get this worked on by a mechanic and no idea what to do...

Not sure why the image flipped after I uploaded it

if you have a small wire welder you can weld a nut on the end of the broke stud to try and get it out. or try some vice grips since it looks like there is enough sticking out to get a good bite. did the other 2 studs come out with the nut?

Hahaha, been there done that. Your going too have to easy out it or drill it out and helix coil it. Atvkid is my brother... Pm him and he will help a lot he has done it 2-5 times lol hope it works out for you.

Only one had a nut and stud, the rest are bolts?

bolts are fine to use. I know they make it alot easier getting the headers on

In short: Your not in a good situation.

ive been there and done that and that area is VERY thin and in reality the repair may not work too well.

Id heat it thoroughly, then take a candle and put it on the threads. What this does is once the metal heats up it expands and when you put the candle on there it absorbs the wax into the threads.

Then id take a pair of vise grips and see if you can get it out.

All else fails drill it out very carefully and you can possibly use an EZ out or salvage the threads.

Also it shouldnt have bolts in there, should have studs. Bolts will snap easier b/c your taking them in and out of the head, unlike just a nut from the stud.

When its all said and done its a smart idea to heat them up and use the candle trick if you want to remove the nuts again.

So here was the next attempt, we tried drilling out the bolt and had no success. The wall of the bolt collapsed. (Read next post for next step)

Once the wall collapsed, I had nothing left but to try the vice grips out again. Luckily IT WORKED! With the edge the broken bolt created, the vice grips were able to grab.

Those extractors do not work on anything larger than Id say a 3/16" bolt. I have never had luck with them ever. Ive also broken many of them.

Glad you got it out.

Yeah it was my last resort idea haha but it somehow worked out.

What i do it take a small cut off wheel either on a grinder or dremel and cut the remaining broke stud fluch with the head. Then get a 8x1.25 (i believe) tap and die, drill and tap a new hole where the original stud was. Then just get some head studs from Honda.

for future reference broken bolt extractors are bust used to remove a bolt broken due to over tightening or it being shirred off, seized bolts are really pushing the limits of the extractor.

glad to see you got the stud out. i had to drill mine out and use a helicoil when it broke.
