Alright im going to make my own gussets for the frame by the upper shock mounts and maybe a couple of other spots. What type of steel should i use and also what paint works well to paint a frame i dont have the money to powdercoat it right now.

1/8" plate steel should be more than enough. You may even be able to go thinner if you want. I'm no expert on fabrication or materials though so don't quote me.

The best way to paint your frame is to have it sandblasted, then prime it before you paint. If you prep it right it will look great and last long.

I used aircraft paint stripper "walmart" and xr silver frame paint from rocky mountain atv, it was low cost and held up a VERY long time.

The aircraft stripper sprays on and 20 mins later rinses of all the paint with a water hose, then you clean it with soap/degreeser and dry it and paint it.

Automotive paint or rustoleum "not in the spray can" from lowes or home depot are very good paints to use, Ive also used spray can paint on my a-arm's and it came out good but does chip easily.

Gusset's arent needed on a 400ex, Ive had gnarly accidents at W.O.T. and havent bent or cracked or broke anything "on the frame" yet.

Although it is a good cheap insurance policy for the "just in case" scenario, because it has actually happend to people.

I wish that was true i snapped the frame right by the front shock mounts

Ya like johndoe said rustoleum works nice. I just painted mine about a month ago rustoleum safety red and it came out pretty decent. Buy a quart of paint and primer and a gallon of acetone and clean the frame up and start painting. I believe it only cost me like around 30$ or so.

It softens the ride up when you have the taller 450R shocks on.
