ik our 400s are a very reliable machine but is true the more work we do to them as in making them more faster we have to worry about the crank or is this mainly with the 450s?

i have broke about everything possible on a quad. Weather due to mechanical error or just my bad luck, one thing in the engine i have never had go bad is the crank.

Never seen a 400 with a bad one, sure its happened but its not all to common

The 450s have this problem b/c of the design.

The only quad I have ever heard of having crank issues is the 04/05 TRX450Rs.

I have an 05' that I rebuilt the engine in 2009 with a 12.5:1 440 kit, and stage 2 cam, hd clutch kit, i have a full exhaust, k&n, jetted, all the little things. Never did HD head studs or changed timing change and run 93 gas, the motor ticks loudly and knocks like h*** but runs stronger than ever. It was like that since it was rebuilt and i just assumed it was from the cam and the mods but after reading on this site I now see things I should have done different. But, I've never had any problems with it except a little bit of a oil seepage out of the head gasket that I have cleaned up and hasn't happened since the first year. Long story short, this quad has been through h*** and back between my brother and me, from being rolled down hills and smashed into trees several times to floating 300ft down a creek in 4ft of water a few days after a flood. You name it this quad has been through it. These motors are bullet proof and run forever. :D

my 400ex is a 2000 model. I got it a couple years ago from a boy at work and it still had the stock piston in it. now its got a 416 JE 11:1. Ive rode mine pretty hard, alot of long WOT runs and alot of time in the high rpms as well as lugging the crap out of it in too high of a gear in the woods an stuff.

its hard to say how long they will last when you take care of em right. but when for whatever reason I have to pull my motor out the frame to split the cases for something.....im putting a stroker crank in it :p, whether it needs one or not.

^^ This..
And it wasn't the crank it was the bearings.. Honda corrected the problem part way through 05 I beleive..

06+ Honda's or any other 450 doesn't have this problem..

I know but its been very loud as far as the ticking and knocking for 2 years now and I ride it about every weekend. It runs great so I'm not about to open up the motor to look or change parts now. I keep up the maintenance on it, change the oil after every 2-3 rides or so..

Sounds like the head wasn't bored tight enough to me.. Or the rings didn't sit right. A lot of different factors here

Have you jetted it properly?

Mine ticked alot before I jetted it properly, with 12;1 you should probaly be using race gas not 93. It will knock if you have the wrong gas without enough octane, they call it "pinging".

Ya i know about the gas I'm not worried about it though haven't had a problem yet and I dont feel like paying the price for race gas or searching on where to get it. And ya its jetted properly from what I can tell, 42 pilot 190 main 2.5 turns on af screw and air box lid off, runs strong through all gears.

I think 12.5:1 on 93 octane is the problem here.

Agreed I would never run 93 in something like that..... sounds like you're pinging.
