I bought one a few months back and didn't realize not too many people have tried using the 02 ignition on the R, but I just wanted to let you guys know I put mine on yesterday with very few modifications and it seems to work great. I think it should be a cheaper alternative to the 2001..

Post pictures! What modifications did you have to do to make it work?

All I had to do was cut the rubber seal where the wire goes into the stator cover, make a jumper wire to ground the coil, and seal off the power valve plug...it bolts right up to the adapter plate.

does the CDI have the same plug style as the 2001?

I don't think so. The 2002 has 2 small round plugs.

I don't think anybody ever stated that other years don't work. I'm pretty sure it's just that the 2001 has the best powercurve matched to the quad.

As far as I know almost any year will bolt up, it's the power curve that is most desirable in the 2001.

2003 works too, but it has a digital ignition which is much different as well.

I searched and searched and never found any evidence of someone actually running the 2002 ignition. Called esr and they said it wouldn't work, the only thing I found was a guy that was planning on running one on a kart with a 250r motor.
Also all years after 2000 are digital not just 2003.

Great good work! Did you ride it yet or just start it up? I'm curious if you could degree the flywheel and check the timing with a light to see how many degrees BTDC it is firing at a fast idle (~3000 rpm) thanks!

I have ridden it. I'm not sure about the fast idle timing, also my adapter plate is adjustable (must be a ct) . It runs real strong though and smooth through the power. I'm not sure If the 2001 is the same but this one has 3 timing marks on it, 1 on the flywheel and two on the plate that mount two the case which are about 1/4" apart from eachother. I'm sure one is TDC but I'm wondering what the 2nd is for? (Probably a dumb question)

To clarify this for other readers considering buying a CR250 ignition:
In 2000 forward Honda made all their ignitions digital not in 2003.
The 2000 and 2001 don't have the PV connector so they only require cutting/fitment of the rubber grommet and need to purchase an ESR adapter plate - otherwise a plug and play system.

The power curve is different between all the years but people also run an 01 125 CDI with the 01 stator/flywheel. No idea how big of a difference in the prgramming between them though.
