Was wondering peoples opinions on making the 400 a 416 questions are what all is needed to do this the right way around how much will it cost and what will i gain from doing this? Also if i just go with a stage one hotcam what can i expect from it?

Oh also would the above mentioned things be my best options for low to mid range power i mostly ride trails fast and just wanna be a little faster in the woods. If not what would you suggest?

a 11:1 piston, stage 2 hotcam, and if your at stock bore now go to a 85.5MM which is a 402cc.

You wont see gains from bore size unless your going big bore really.

Everything you would need would be

Wiseco 11:1 piston $130-ish

Hotcam $130-ish

make sure your valves are in specs with the manual, if they are regrind them.

Very easy. and you can replace the valve guide seals while your at it (they will be included in your gasket kit. )

Valve grinding compound $5

New timing chain probably $35

Gasket kit, Cometic MLS or the tusk MLS gasket kit. $40 ish

Some guys diss on the tusk gasket kit, i like them.

^i agree with everything there, and i'd like to add that a 450r carb will give you very noticeable gains, especially on a built engine. you will definitely have the low-mid range power that you are looking for. you don't really need to waste bore sizes to get it.

edit: do you have any suspension work?

X2 agreed, with above replies ^^^.
especially with not needing to waste bore sizes. (i.e. - 416).
if you want to go to a 402 / 406 (if necessary), to get your bore nice and clean,... that's fine.

but remembering this is a air cooled machine,.... the more cylinder wall you keep,.... the better.

Apples to apples,..
a 11:1 402 / 406 is going to run just as well as a 11:1 416

Also mentioned above is the front suspension.
You NEED to upgrade the front shocks if you are still running the OEM Pogo-Sticks.

Not trying to steal your thread man but I have 450r shocks and GTT a arms with a stock rear and my ride seems to be really rough.. any thoughts?

With +2" a arms, you should not be having a problem, even with stock 450r springs.

You could try backing the preload down, as well as the compression setting on the front shocks.
If that won't get the ride you are looking for, then your next step would be to change the springs to dual / triple rate, in accordance with your rider weight and a arm lengths.

example-
I have '05 450r fronts, with Works Triple Rates, (600/600/215), preload set to near minimum, (See pic), compression at 1/5 turn in, rebound at 1/4 turn in, on stock a arms, my rider weight is approx. 190-200, and the ride is very plush.

I'm a big boy at 255lbs.. lol. I will try to lighten the compression all the way off. I also am having trouble adjusting the toe and camber.. there has to be an easier way lol

So do i need to bore at all for the weisco piston?
I would like to keep engine as cool as possible

Well depending on the wear of your head, youre probably going to need a small bore.. nbd. and if you jet the bike perfect it will run cool. You could also add a spal fan or an oversized oil tank

You have what, 2 clickers on 450r fronts? Right?

Well anyways, you dont want to bottom out the clickers. Whether its completely Hard or completely soft, you want to turn them all the way (whichever way your going) and then back them out a few clicks. Dont bottom them all the way one way.

Go on ebay and get your piston kit. $130 and get either a 85.5MM or a 86MM. Just to be safe.

You will want to bore it bigger since your sleeve could be egged or possibly out of round, then when you bore it, you are starting fresh and insuring that the cylinder is perfectly rounded.

You really wanna see a difference in that rebuild, get it ported and polished
