I need a new helmet, my old bell riot is done the liners inside are shot. Nothing insanely expensive either.

I like the helmet to a larger view area (why do many seem to be very small?) be snug on the cheeks and fit tight since I have an oval shaped head. Im open to suggestions as well.

Currently Im looking at
1. Fly racing kinetic. So far reviews are excellent but one person did say the view areas tiny. I did manage to try one of these on and it felt ok-do all fly helmets not touch the top of your head inside?

2. HJC CL X6, seems ok but I havent managed to find one to try on.

I know you said cheap, but I swear by my Shoei VFX-W. call up ExtremeSupply, they got me mine for $350. Most comfortable helmet I've ever had as well as great ventilation. It was worth every penny I spent.

The last couple of Fox v3's I've bought have been leftover clearance and I've gotten them from 140-175.

just got this last week..
http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/45/67/202/713/-/29185/HJC-CLX-6-Ryot-Helmet

its my third hjc clx series helmet in ten years.if i get a chance ill post some pics of what they withstand.first one took a face plant at 65 on a paved road,it cracked but held strong.it fared much better than i did.that was '01.the second one took a face plant on a dirt road at about 50.no cracks just a lot of good scuffs and diggs.totaled the quad and i ended up with separated shoulder, internal bleeding,3 days in the icu.almost took my kneecap off as well as tons of road rash, torn ligaments the list goes on but no head injuries...(i guess thats debatable as i totaled another quad a few weeks ago and i'm still riding almost daily).bought it in '01 and the wreck was '07,still riding with it as my back-up helmet from time to time as the foam is still decent.raced for years with it before the '07 crash.i just cant say enough good about them for the money.new one feels great, light, good flow.they always fit well and are really comfortable.unless i go with a shoei or arai i wont buy another brand of helmet.before my hjc's i had a bell (circa 96) so i know where you're coming from.unless you have an obnoxiously large head go with a large not xl.eye openings are large, thats one of my prerequisites.i wont even run roll-offs because they limit the view too much.

I'm in the same boat aswell. Been needing a new helmet for awhile but haven't had the cash. I'm looking at buying this one: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/43/-/439/713/-/32383/Fox-Racing-V2-Matte-Helmet-2012 I like the color scheme of it, it matches my quad. I'd like to have it in a gloss finish rather than matte, but I can live with that. Can't go wrong with Fox.

On another note, what happened to Shift Racing? They used to have some badass looking helmets and gear, but I haven't been able to find them anymore. Did they go belly up or what?

Keep in mind different brands have slight variances in shape. One brand may fit your head shape perfectly while another in the same size does not. While the Shoei is gods gift to my dome shape, it may not be to yours. Just something to keep in mind when people say what is comfortable for them. I have a couple buddies who prefer the Fox V3 over Shoei, and I hate the V3. The shape doesn't hug my head the way I like. Go to your local place and try on a bunch. That's what I did before buying. Good luck!

My current mx helmet is a fox v2, my sledding helmet is an EVS Takt and I really like that. My streetbike helmet is a shoei rf1100 and that is amazing compared to the hjc I was borrowing. I'd love to get a vfx-w....the old v2 is pretty well used......hmmmm......

I just bought my 2nd Fly Kinetic. I've had my old one for about two and a half years, so it was time for a new one. I love them. They are pretty light, you have good vision, and they breathe well. My first was a large, but after the padding wore out some, it became loose. This time I bought a medium and it fits much nicer.

I've got a 1/2 off Bell MX-2 from RMATV last year. Fits well, offers good view, and is flat black so there's lots of room for paint, pinstriping or stickers. Anyway, haven't ridden it for any length of time, so don't know about ventillation, but it's DOT & SNELL 2010 approved. Has very nice padding too.

James.

This. The Fox V3 is an extremely lightweight and well-fitting helmet. I would look for a closeout deal on an older model. I do love the fit and feel of my old Shoei VFX-R though. You definitely get what you pay for when it comes to helmets in my experience.

Here's a new one on Ebay, for $160 with goggles: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-FOX-V3-PILOT-HELMET-NEW-SPY-GOGGLES-WITH-QUICK-SNAPS-/150794410508?pt=Apparel_Merchandise&hash=item231c0c1a0c&vxp=mtr

i have a few different helmets, fox V3, fox V2, shift $30 special, oneal 5 series and oneal 8 series.

I can honestly say the shift one fits a little weird and doesn't keep my head as cool.

Out of all of those i was really surprised by the oneal 5 series I thought it was better then what I paid for it. I didn't expect much to be honest.

8 series is awesome too lighter and cooler then the 5 series but I still think the bang for the buck winner is 5 series.

the fox V3 and V2 are both good too but I didn't feel like they were worth what I paid for them. the v2 also doesn't fit as nice as the V3 even though there same size, I mean it feels way tighter.

exactly. i took a chance on a 5 series this year and have been happy with it so far. i had a fox V2 before that i was happy with, but it costed 3x what the o'neal did.

Was riding this past memorial day and was trying to drag some dirt down to make a jump when I flipped backwards on the quad.

My old pos bell helmet (lol I got it at walmart-think they messed up and ordered them in by accident as it was 100 dollar helmet but I paid WAY less) took the brunt of the handlebars to my face. It cracked in 2 places and is toast. Saved my face and more importantly my teeth.

Friend of mine found a thor quadrant helmet someone left behind but already sold it to another buddy. Plus it was solid black and can you say HOT in the sun. I did try it at least and it fit.

Dropped the cash on a thor quadrant helmet red/white/blk looking one from RMATV. Lets hope it fits, I got a weird noggin and am very picky.

It wasnt cheap, but neither is my noggin. That bell helmet saved my arse more times than I can count for the money I paid.

Oh on another note I also got a pair of progrip goggles with the light sensitive lenses. Awesome. Great adjusting for the light, the goggles are comfy and vent well (aint fogged yet!) and the lens is tough. After the horrible faceplant and tumble at treverton the lens is scratched but usable, I bought 2 new lenses anyways tho.

I figured out how I manage it-I actually go riding.. You sit at home...lol :blah:

Seriously tho, this one was totally my fault. Treverton was just a horrible fluke and I honestly have little desire to go back there.

That's a shame Marc I think given the chance you would have enjoyed the land marks and the trails on the East side of the road. I still say it's all Julio's fault...if he had just stayed in formation and off that damn hill lol. But I know you also have to weight in the 4 hour drive each way along with the coal dust when you have a decent place to ride 15 minutes away. I won't give up though, I will try to get Lonnie and Pappy up there in the fall and you will have to come along ;)

Glad you didn't get hurt (again) gl with the new helmet, hope you never have to find out how good it is.

Flying there under, under the sea!!!!!!!

Hahah funny Tom.

It wasnt that bad, I over exaggerated if anything.. I think the trails were pretty good.

You do have to admit I have an awesome spot not even 20 mins from my house. A spot where we dont come out looking like black gorillas when were done lol :D

Ill take another trip out there, maybe in a few weeks. my shoulders still kinda bothering me right now and I just sent my worked shock out to be redone.

OldGuyonaQuad
05-31-2012, 04:32 PM
that's cool
hope the shock doesn't cost you too much
yea I like your spot even with the 50 minute drive for me and I hate coming out in black face but I don't like looking over my shoulder for the man either ;).

Shame we live in a communist state...Wharton State forest has some great riding but you need a license plate....so all those Jeeps, 4x4s and Enduros can rip and rut up the trails but we ATV owners...great there I go on another NJ riding rant :D

I know its hard b/c your not local and gotta park somewhere. Most times we park at a friends, but the woods has never got us yet. Gotta admit my spot is pretty dang nice-but by now its kinda boring b/c I know the entire place.

Didnt see the man there on memorial day, but then again they were probably busy elsewhere. Its a shame we live in a state that puts more funding, time and energy into catching people riding quads than fighting crime.

your spot is nice considering how close it is (for both of us) and last time out we did some exploring. We found this shack in the woods that I assumed was made by kids to party. Ron (the doomsday prep er ) thinks someone actually lives there that fell on hard times:huh

You can see it at the end of this short video.

I got a Fox V2 not too long ago. Nice wide viewing area and fits a lot tighter than my Thor helmet.

CJM

Oh that, one of the guys built it not to long ago. We used to hang there till we figured out the cops are to close as the shacks too close to the old spot.

Got the helmet friday, tried it and it seems a bit looser than Id like so I ordered a medium. Gonna send the large back when I can compare the two if the medium fits tho.
