What is the best manual to get for the 400ex? I need to split the cases and repair the transmission in an extra motor and would like to have a manual for assistance. There is a Clymer manual on Craigslist for $25 but I would rather pay and just make sure I get a good one if this one isnt that great. Sorry if this is a repost, I didnt search......

Genuine Honda service manual is gunna get my vote. I got one off of a member on here for around $50 and it contains EVERYTHING you would ever need to know when working in a 400ex.

I haven't used a honda genuine service manual but the clymer is only $35 new and has everything in it...

I've heard that Clymer manuals have wrong torque values in them and if you rebuild an engine using their torque values you'll end up snapping bolts left and right.

Oh well i don't think thats true, i've done top end and clutch with there specs and never had a issue.. They don't even have the torgue specs for the small cover bolts, just the important stuff.. What does that honda manual say for the little bolts that hold the crank case covers on anyhow?

Ive found clymer lacking in a few areas, best to use the honda manual and the clymer together.

In all honesty tho, I dont need much of a manual unless I need torque values. Pay attention to how things go together and come apart, thats all. Once you been in one of these engines everything else is relatively similar anyways.

Well I have never paid anyone to work on anything of mine so I am mechanically inclined, just thought it would be helpful to have the manual since I have never split cases before. Never used a manual before either so I don't really know what they tell you or don't tell you. My buddy works at dealership and said I can just use theirs though so thanks for the help anyway guys.

I like the honda manual but I've never dealt with a different one.
I got mine in PDF for like $7 online.
