Decided to tear into the '89 to send off parts for re-platting. I've been shipping alot of stuff for plating lately. Man it's nice having near NOS condition parts to throw on.... A couple projects are getting a few upgraded parts newly plated, and others builds are on hold for plating purposes. Wish I'd got into plating parts a long time ago.
Anyway, here's the little bit I've got done on the '89. This will be an all OEM stock resto, but will be outfitted with all the Hondaline goodies. I might even dress it up as a fresh cross country racer ready to do battle at Black Water (in mostly stock trim). Trying to go totally retro with this stuff and have an old school look right from the pages of Dirwheels circa '89-'90 ish.

That was a clean bike before teardown, I would be afraid to use it after you get it back together. Also , I see in the pic of the plated parts there are some for a few bikes, but what would you say it would cost to do all the parts for just one quad? Ballpark

Not looking to start a frenzy....
Really only about $150/plus shipping. Keep in mind shipping can get high due to weight. I ABUSE flat rate boxes ;).
I've used two different shops so far. It can be tuff to find shops that still do the original yellow cad that was used on some OE parts (EPA issues I'm told). One particular shop can handle larger stuff like OEM rear axles and steering stems, but he's kind of an "inside favor" connection. There is a real learning curve as to getting all the colors correct as was built from the factory. Many of the parts perceive to be painted are actually plated. I've got 5 builds going currently so that's the extra parts (TRX/ATC 250Rs).
It's ganna be a long road....

Just some picks of the mess started from tear down, a couple weeks ago. Really getting confusing as to what goes where.... Currently two trikes torn into awaiting Pinit (Jody Meadows) items, and the #1 ATC is getting this old Mugen jug. Just finished PC work on two more ATC 250R frames today undergoing restorations. The springs are for an '86 SELVY Performance (Steve Wright) TRX 250R (slow progress). A bit overwhelming at times, in a modest garage.
Sending stuff off for plating seems to be the most economical in bulk, so simultaneous tear down is a unfortunate necessity. Can't wait to get some stuff reassembled....

Hey man, those builds are gonna be sweet, I'm sure it's gonna be a little hectic with them all going on at once. I have heard of mugen before but can you tell us a little more a out that cylinder? It looks pretty interesting, never seen one before. Nor heard any history about them.

Thanks, guys.

Hartwill:
Mugen was started by a son of Soichiro Honda (HONDA founder). Here's a link to a Mugen page. It doesn't make reference to the ATV market, but gives general history of Mugen.
I also have an '85 CR 250R Mugen jug that might get used on a trike build. I unfortunately don't have the matching head for that particular jug, so it's a back burner project. These cylinders are pretty rare and appear to be less than 100 per application (bike model). Each casting is numbered under the intake, and are known to be in only double digits. My ATC/TRX jug is a #83 and CR version is a #52.
BTW Will, I need to give you props for your help with the contact info and reference to Cascade Plating. Tracy, (owner) does great work! Unfortunately, he doesn't do olive, or black colors, and can't do larger stuff like the rear axles. Regardless, I'll be sending him stuff for silver and yellow cad. Tracy seems to have a good work ethic and is quite accommodating! Thanks Will !

Motofool250r:
I made mention of the approximate cost for a single bike's parts earlier above (post #7). Let me know if that's what you were looking for. One of the shops I've used as mentioned above is Cascade Plating out of Elyria, OH. The gentleman's name is Tracy. Please don't quote my ballpark price if you call Tracy, as he sets the prices and may not know until he sees your parts in hand. It's a little bit of a gamble sending your parts off to some stranger, hoping it all returns intact, and not lost. I sent some insanely tiny parts (smaller than a 1/4"), with no trouble. I was pretty impressed to say the least.

No problem man, I'm just glad everything turned out good for you.. that's weird with the larger stuff because he told me he would cadd coat a pipe for me.. maybe it was shipping he was worried about or maybe I am putting words in ho's mouth, lol. Oh well nice job on everything. Can't wait to see the end result, be sure and keep us updated. Oh and very interesting info on the mugen stuff..

that's weird with the larger stuff because he told me he would cadd coat a pipe for me..

Tracy just told me his plating "tube" was only 30 inches long, when I asked about axles. Maybe that's only on his yellow cad line....??
Guess a guy would just have to call & check on specific dimensions. The other guy I've used said he could do a hole frame if he wanted (joking), but didn't recommend it. I asked what he thought about a pipe just for giggles, and he thought it might not look so good or last with extreme heat cycles. He did do five axles for me and they look awesome. Though, with normal use they will fade and tarnish like all stock OEM axles, eventually.

Hey Dustin, kinda forgot about this thread. Well as luck is on my side today, a cold call has possibly landed me the missing Mugen CR head I've been looking for. But other than that not much proggress to show off. Just a lot more platting and parts gathering. Although if you're hungry for old school, maybe you'll chuckle at this old turd. A budy offered this tired Polaris trike to me before listing to C-list yesterday. About as cute as a red headed step child, but it will haul the chainsaw in our woods for cutting new trails with my kids. To be clear, they DO refer to these as a 250R.... lol
Busy summer. Hope to get some build progress this fall and winter. Family first!

mugen is huge in the JDM car world for toyota and honda parts, they build amazing engines and body parts for
to us acura, and lexus, toyota, and honda, plus mazada as well but to them its just
honda, toyota and mazda, and im sure they do for some other cars not shipped to us, they are even hard parts to buy and are very expensive , alot of it i hear on new parts is taxing coming into the US from japan, so some order from shops in china etc to save money
