I am trying to determine the proper torque for the head studs on the 400. It appears that there are many different opinions on this issue. My manual clearly states that the head studs should be torqued to 15 ft. lbs. and the stud nuts to 33 ft. lbs.

On the other hand, I have read many threads on this site and others that say the studs should receive 33 ft. lbs. and the nuts should also receive 33 ft. lbs. The sticky in this thread even says 33 ft. lbs. for both the studs and the nuts. Can someone please explain to me why the Clymer manual recommends one value (15 ft. lbs.) and everyone else recommends another (33 ft. lbs.)? Which one is correct?

I don't understand why there seems to be so much confusion around this subject. It seems like such a standard procedure should be clear?

Also I forgot to mention that my studs are stock.

Clymer is wrong, period.

33 ft-lbs is the proper torque as per the honda manual.
