I have a 2008 450ER and it has a K&N filter with a lid with holes in it and no baffle in the stock exhaust, the jets are a 42 pilot, 160 main and it cuts out when ur in first and give it full throttle real quick, wat should I change it too? Please help

sounds a little lean....first of all get a uni filter and if u must run a k&n richen up the needle if that dont help bump the main

Just got the k&n, never had problems with the ex's k&n, ill probably get a outerwears for it tho, the spark plug is black, dont that mean rich?

yea black means rich but im assuming its not a new plug so thats not gonna tell u anything untill u get a new plug. and if it never done that befor the k&n then its lean (what filter befor?). and please put the baffel back in your pipe man lol

We just got it a month ago, the kid that had it after Johnny hale took it out so I dont have it or i would, before we got the k&n the kid had a over sized foam filter and he cut the airbox in half, we bought a new box and filter for it, ya its an old plug ill get a new one and go from there I guess

How does it run once your up to normal riding speeds? is it only dying when you jab the throttle extremely fast? If thats the case it sounds like a leak jet problem. The leak jet is a tiny jet coming out of the accelerator pump.

It seems to only bog down when u jab it, but Idk wat size leak jet it is there's no number on it, I checked it before I looked at the pilot jet, is a 42 pilot, and 160 main the stock jetting? If so did anybody do this before to tell me wat jets I need? Or wat u did

160 main would not be lean for an 08 with ur mods. At least not far enough off to cause any noticeable problems.

If you are bogging when you snap the throttle it could be either the leak jet, the pilot, or the Air/Flue screw setting.
Any of those 3.

The Air/fuel screw is the fine tuning for the pilot jet. So if you need to go more then 2.5 turns out on the A/F screw then you need to bump up to a 45 pilot and then retune the A/F screw.

The stock leak jet is pretty large, which makes the accelerate pump shot weak.
The leak jet lets fuel "leak" back into the float bowl when you snap the throttle and compress the accelerator pump plunger. So what ever fuel is allowed to leak back, doesn't end up in the combustion chamber.
So you need to install a smaller leak jet to richen your fuel mixture.
The HRC kit comes with a #55 leak jet. Which is normally recommended.
Or you could just totally close it off by sticking a normal cap head screw in it.

The mods you have is pretty much what the HRC kit does. Baffle out and airbox lid removed/modded.
And the HRC jetting for an 06+ R is....
162MJ 45pilot HRC needle middle clip and a #55 leak jet.

If i got the HRC kit and installed it with the mods I have and get it runnin good, then do u think I would have to rejet it if i got a sparks exhaust? Cuz the stock exhaust without a baffle is basically like a slip on right? Today I tryed a 140, 150, & 172 main and didnt run very good, tomorrow im gonna try a 165, would put in a 45 pilot but its at my dads, but I might get a extra at Honda and check it out

eh, the stock with the baffle out isn't quite the same as a slip on because is still has those inner baffles with the small holes.
But the jetting won't be that much different

If you go from you current setup when its tuned right to a full sparks exhaust you will probably just have to mess with you A/F screw, as long as your pilot jet has some leeway.
At least in terms of it running acceptable, if you dyno'd it with and air/fuel meter of course there would be a difference and changes made. But fine by most peoples standards.

Your messing with the main jet for no reason. You could probably run from 155 to 175 and be fine.
Going from a 160 to a 165 isnt going to fix a bog problem, just a slight difference in power.

Your problem lies in the pilot jet or leak jet area.

Yeah im not a carb expert at all, ill put the 160 back in and get a 45 pilot, and u say a smaller leak jet?

Correct, 55 leak or anything lower, 45, 35 etc.
While your in there the HRC needle is a good addition.

Ok well I called Johnny Hale cuz the 45 pilot didnt work and he said put the 42 back in do I did then I asked about the HRC kit and he said the NVCQ needle is better and get a 55 leak jet so I ordered that from him, so ill have a 42 pilot, 160 main, 55 leak and a NVCQ needle, does that sound ok

Yup sounds like a good starting point. Now it all depends how it runs, still might have to make changes.

Let us know how it goes once u swap that leak jet.

Ok will do, have ya'll ever heard of that needle? Johnny Hale says there better than HRC but Idk, wat groove should i put the needle on?
