i have a honda 450r set up for motocross and occasionally ride at the dunes. i have a set of 20x11-10 gbc sand sharks but was thinking about running 18x9.5-8 itp sand stars. i feel like the 18s could give me better performance but was wondering since they are normally for mini quads could i still run them on my 450r? or would it cause problems? I run 18inch tires on dirt.

I prefer a 20" 6 paddle hauler. 18" is to small for sand.

ok thank you that sounds like the solution because the sand sharks have 8 paddles so 6 would probably make the difference i am looking for.

yup get a set of gliders if you want more wheel spin or a set of V tread paddles.

also just curious whats the difference between 18 inch motocross tires being used in the sand and 18 inch paddles? wouldnt the paddles perform better?

prepare to have your mind blown if you've only tried moto tires in sand haha. ESPECIALLY a set of haulers which are a very nice paddle. I actually like sandstars though

i was talking about using the 18 inch sand stars in the sand on a 450 lol i haven't heard anyone try it. I have always used 20's but felt they were to big due to my suspension setup and gearing.

The reason nobody runs an 18" paddle is because the blades are smaller for smaller bikes. You're not going to get very good bite at all because you can't fit many paddles on an 18" tire. I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with a 20" 6 paddle Skat Trak Hauler. My bike is an MX setup that sees about 80% dunes. I also have a set of 9 paddle extremes when I feel like riding on 2 wheels a lot. :D I love my 6 paddle haulers for duning and the 9s when I feel like riding wheelies all day.

You'll probably have to order them. Shops around here only stock 8 and 10 paddle haulers. Last time I ordered some haulers I believe it was a 6 week wait.

i have 20" sandstars, and honestly of all the times i went to the dunes in the last 2 years.. i bet i've used them 30% of the time. if you're going to be drag racing and/or doing big hill climbs, then yeah paddles are a must, but for the freeriding i do in the relatively-small dunes here in michigan, i have more fun on my 18" knobbies. they don't "stick" as hard as paddles, but as mentioned above maybe something with less paddle would be the ticket for me too.

The type of sand you have also helps to determine what kind of paddle. Many people in oregon run 8 paddles standard and up since they work out here where as others run lower in other areas. But yes a 20in is great, alot of people run them except for drag racers.

And YFZ-FoFiddy-TC ..I have a set of 9 paddle extremes that i really should try..I havnt even touched them yet..haha..Usually i just run sandstars since i more play ride sand trails and some duning too. When i feel like jumping or climbing I got grab my bike so i can air it out too :D

I very much like my sandstars, but I ride a combo of soft sand/harder packed sand and trails. People dont like being behind ya lol..

They are pretty good hooking up at the drags too...(My stock bore bike racing two 480's)

Most people here run an 8 paddle as well. That's because most people are uninformed and converted the standard of 8 paddles from 2 strokes to 4 strokes. 4 stroke bikes need less paddle, that's why you see full on drag YFZs running a 10 paddle tire while banshees are running 12/14. I've researched the exact reasons but can't recall them. I'll try and find my links and post them up.

Was it because of the more linear powerband so they dont need as much traction

Bender, if i go to silver lake next summer would it be worth buying paddles or just run my gnccs?
