so a few of us were riding over the weekend and my buddy and i were comparing temps

Mine:
03 440ex full white brothers, uni filter (no lid), stage 2 hotcam, jetted carb (only know 165 jet) 298 degree at cam tensioner

my buddies:
06 440 full white brothers, k&n filter (no lid), stage 2 hotcam, jetted carb (again only know 165 jet), CFM oil tank - 180 degree at cam tensioner

WTF is going on here, can the tank really make you run 100 DEGREES cooler??!?!?!?

Some thing is def not right. The oil tank is a good help, but not 100 deg cooler. I would compare all your jetting. Lean jetting can cause it to run hot. 165 main seems lean to me in both cases.

id say your a bit lean there bud. I only have a 426 and when I was running the EX carb I was at 170 when it was warm out.

The oil tank does help to cool the temps a bit tho.

Thumpins right, its your jetting being to lean. Up it before you fry that topend.

Wow man that sounds real lean I run 180 and i'm all stock except cam, intake and exhaust but my quad runs cold but my spark plug is gray so i'm not worried.

On my 416 I ran a 155 main on the stock 400ex carb..it was perfect.

Does sound lean BUT that Still doesnt explain why his is running so much cooler than yours.

Your at the same setup (minus air filters) same jetting, but he is running 100 degrees cooler than yours...

Something is not right.

Totally right, wanna laugh. He is blowing white & blue smoke and spuddering like crazy now lol. He may be cooler and pulling on me but I think hes got more problems than me right now haha

I have a 450r carb being installed this week and will jet and install the cooler once it comes in

Its just my opinion but i would rather have a spal fan then the oil cooler.

Cheaper mod too.

What oil & weight are you two running? Different viscosity's can affect temps & how long was each machine running when temps were taken?

And what octane fuel & sparkplug?

Honestly unless you run the spal fan constantly it didnt seem to make a huge difference. But the theory of more oil = lower temps is sound. Theres more oil to get hot, therefore takes longer to get hot and more oil going thru the cooler as well, same idea.

As for jetting, Im SUPER close to where he lives, and a 440 needs a 180 main easy. My 416 needed a 170.

My 440 uses a 220 main jet with or without a 450r carb.

no cooling mods at all, and still runs stock temps.

It will actually run better being slightly lean. When I said it was perfect I meant it was perfect. I dug up a picture just for the heck of it. This is at 600-800' above sea level 416, stage 2 HC, some port work, slip on and stock 400 carb. The point I am making is just because you live close to him and have the close to the same mods doesn't always mean you're jetting will be remotely close to his. I've never heard of a 416 with my mods running a 155.

That sucks, you got beat by a 440ex with a blown motor?

Maybe that 450r carb will do the trick...
